HUMOUR/TRUE STORY: WHY YOU NEED RSMD RIDER^

Lumberjack's revenge

An angry Austrian lumberjack used his chainsaw to reduce his boss's
furniture to matchsticks. After the fight at work, the 37-year-old
drove to his boss's flat in the town of St. Johann, reports Tiroler
Krone.

After cutting a rectangle into the door with his chainsaw to get in,
he then destroyed a table, armchair, corner seat, the complete kitchen
furniture and the wardrobe.

Neighbours who heard the noise of the chainsaw called the police. When
they arrived, they found the man sitting peacefully amongst the
remains of his boss's furniture. Police say the man caused an
estimated £3,500 of damage.

Note:
RSMD ~ Riot, Strike and Malicious Damage rider is available for
houseowner and householder (household contents) insurance policies.

HUMOUR/TRUE STORY: WHY YOU NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE

Dream holiday turns to nightmare

A German professor who went on a dream holiday to Costa Rica woke up
in an airport departure lounge to find his leg had been amputated.

The professor said he had gone to see a doctor at a hospital in San
Jose because his left foot was swollen. He said: "An aspirin usually
did the trick. I have had the problem before - it was nothing serious
- just something caused by my diabetes.

"When I got to the hospital they put me on a bed and I heard the word
amputate. I tried to protest, but before I knew it they had given me
drugs to black me out, and when I woke up I was at the departure
lounge.

"My suitcases were by my side - and then I realised my leg was
missing. I couldn't move, and when I checked my wallet I found that
£200 had been taken out and replaced with a receipt for the
amputation.

"It was like a bad dream and I could not believe what had happened."

Professor Ronald Jurisch, 50, from Dessau in Sachsen-Anhalt, said the
holiday was booked for him by friends for his birthday as the trip of
a lifetime.

After the operation, Prof Jurisch collapsed and was taken to a private
clinic where he was diagnosed with blood poisoning. He said it was
four weeks until a special medically equipped plane took him back to
Germany where he underwent 23 more operations to try and repair the
damage from the amputation.

He is now seeking to take legal action against the hospital in San Jose.

Something not dissimilar from the missing leg story (but less dramatic) happened to my mother while on a Soviet cruise ship. She collapsed on a pier in Turkey from heatstroke and awoke once to hear the ship's doctor say (in Russian) "I can't operate here, my instruments are rusty." When they arrived at port she was rushed to hospital to have her appendix removed - she remembers waking to see her surgeon examining it puzzled "this is a perfectly healthy appendix..."

Rooms for Rent

in Kota Warisan, 43900 SEPANG
(next to Salak Tinggi ERL Station)

I have two rooms in an apartment for rent in Kota Warisan, Sepang, right next to the Salak Tinggi ERL Station (the KLIA Transit stops there). The monthly rental is RM250.00 (for single occupancy) or RM150 per pax (for twin sharing). The postal address is:

Unit B-3-6, 3rd Floor (corner unit)
Block B, Villa Impian Apartment
Persiaran Warisan
Kota Warisan
43900 SEPANG

The Kota Warisan township is 7 minutes' drive from Putrajaya/Cyberjaya and 2 minutes' drive from KLIA or Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi via the new toll-free 6-lane highway. Suitable for aircrew, MASkargo, Pos Malaysia, Pan Pacific Hotel, ERL & MAB staff as well as people working in Putrajaya or Cyberjaya. The ERL fare to Putrajaya/Cyberjaya ERL Station is only RM3.00 one-way and to KLIA is only RM3.20. People who work at the airport also get a Staff Discount.

As a landlord, I prefer a single lady tenant or a young couple without children. I'm not that keen on renting to students, families or foreign workers. Single guys who don't smoke are okay, too.

The apartment is bright and breezy and really quite adorable. There is 24-hour security guards. The common areas are well-maintained and beautifully landscaped. The Villa Impian apartment complex is on a low hill and it's very airy and breezy. There are lots of shoplots nearby with mini-markets, sundry and hardware stores and the ubiquitous 24-hour kedai mamak. There's also a driving range nearby and the Nilai golf course is just a few minutes' drive away.

If you know of anyone who is my target market, do pass the info along and I can arrange a viewing.

Pasta Preparation Tips

Think you're sous-chef material? Test your knowledge of the finer points of pasta preparation with these expert tips... each one provided by sous-chefs at signature restaurant locations.

1. Start with clean, fresh, cool water. Why? Pasta is absorptive! If your water tastes at all "off," or contains any impurities, you can be sure they're going to taint the finished flavour of your pasta. Filter your home water if possible, and resist the temptation to pre-heat your water using the hot water tap. Water from hot water heaters can taste flat or oxidized, either of which will adversely affect the taste of home cooked pasta.

2. Use as much water as possible. We recommend four quarts as a bare minimum per 12 oz. package of pasta, but 6-8 quarts is ideal. More water will keep strands of pasta from sticking together and reduce the tendency of your pot to boil over. There's science at work here. Trust us.

3. Don't limit yourself to the traditional pasta pot as a cooking vessel. Most customers are surprised to find out that the majority of restaurants that serve pasta use a high-temperature wok to cook their pasta. They do it because it boils their water in half the time. Pots, woks, different stove-types... they all affect boiling time. A little research in this department, as well as some trial and error, should snip valuable minutes off your pasta preparation time.

4. Use salt, but not oil. This was the consensus "personal preference" of the majority of cooks we interviewed. Most recommend about a tablespoon of salt added to boiling water just before laying in the pasta. Adding olive oil, a traditional practice thought to keep the pasta from sticking, turns out not to be necessary.

5. Stir your pasta frequently after it has been added to water and before it resumes a healthy boil. This is the only precaution you need to take to ensure that the pasta does not stick either to the pot or to itself.

6. Don't overcook the pasta (part 1). Were these guidelines listed in order of importance, this one would be at the top of the page. Use the recommended cooking time specified on the package as a general guideline only! Always test for doneness by tasting one or two strands at a time. If the pasta is at all tough, stiff, firm, offering any true resistance -- it needs more time. If it seems relatively soft, but sticks slightly to the teeth, you're almost there. Give it another 30 seconds. Then finito!

7. Don't overcook the pasta (part 2). Now here's a real shocker. Are you sitting down? Pasta continues to cook even after it's been removed from heat and been strained! If it's hot, even warm, and especially if it's swimming in sauce, it's still cooking! To account for this horrifying truth of modern physics, the best chefs typically either a) undercook their pasta slightly if it is to be immediately plated with sauce, or b) rinse their pasta as described in #8, just below. The intentional undercooking of pasta is especially important if you plan to leave just-cooked pasta in a large serving dish as for a dinner party. You'll thank us later.

8. Don't be afraid to rinse, or "shock" pasta. This one may get us in trouble with pasta traditionalists, who consider the rinsing of pasta a grave culinary violation. We're sorry to burst their bubble, but most of America's restaurant kitchens employ such a practice. And it's not just out of necessity. Rinsing pasta briefly in cold or room temperature water allows a chef to halt the cooking process at precisely the right moment. You'll still want to slightly undercook rinsed pasta if you're going to be re-heating it with other ingredients in a skillet or wok (see below) just before serving time. But you'll have some breathing room should your recipe divert your attention elsewhere, and you'll be assured of the perfect doneness when finally ready to plate your completed dish.

9. Use a pre-heated cooking skillet to better "wed" pasta to sauce before serving time. Have your sauce heated and waiting, then toss with your slightly undercooked and drained pasta for about a minute or so over high heat to finish the dish.

10. Never be afraid to experiment. Another contender for the most important rule of all.

Cycling from Singapore to Phuket for Charity ~ Can You Help Out?

Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 19:24:36 +0800
From: "Anthony & Thea Skillicorn" skilli64@singnet.com.sg
Subject: Message for UWC noticeboard.

Five UWCSEA Teachers will cycle 1500 kilometers from Singapore
to Phuket to raise funds for a Tsunami Education Trust.

Over the Easter break, five UWCSEA teachers and two parents are
cycling from Singapore to Phuket, a distance of 1500 km in nine
days. The aim of this physically and mentally challenging cycle
ride is to promote the establishment of, and to raise funds for, a
Tsunami Education Assistance Fund which is being set up at
UWCSEA to offer financial assistance to students orphaned by the
recent tsunami who need financial support to complete their
education. The Fund will officially be launched on Friday 18th
March when the cyclists set off from UWCSEA.

You can get details on this and other UWCSEA tsunami initatives
- the college has already raised over S$120,000 for immediate
and medium term support - and the cycle ride aims to raise at
least S$150,000 for support over the next ten years.

For details on these initiatives, the dates and itinerary of the
riders, please visit the UWCSEA website at:

HUMOUR: The English Language

Have you ever wondered why foreigners have trouble with the English
Language? Let's face it, English is one crazy language. There is no
egg in the eggplant, no ham in the hamburger. And neither pine nor
apple in the pineapple. English muffins were not invented in England.
French fries were not invented in France. We sometimes take English
for granted, but if we examine its paradoxes we find that quicksand
takes you down slowly (not quickly), and boxing rings are square. And
a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. If writers write,
how come fingers don't fing? If the plural of tooth is teeth,
shouldn't the plural of phone booth be phone beeth? If the teacher
taught, why didn't the preacher praught? If a vegetarian eats
vegetables, what the do humanitarians eat? Why do people recite at a
play, yet play at a recital? Or park on driveways and drive on
parkways? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language where
a house can burn up as it burns down, and in which you fill in a form
by filling it out. And a bell is only heard once it goes! English was
invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of
the human race (which, of course, isn't a race at all). That is why
when the stars are out they are visible, but when the lights are out
they are invisible, and why it is that when I wind up my watch it
starts, but when I wind up this observation, it ends.

True Story

There is a true story of a young lady from New York who was deeply in love with her fiance. Unfortunately, he died in 1999. For the next two years, she was hesitant to be committed to another relationship, for fear of facing a similar loss. Though she met a number of gentlemen that she liked, she always held back.

She happened to work in the World Trade Centre and one of the gentlemen that she liked owned a firm that occupied the 101st floor of the WTC. He had proposed to her just before she left for a seminar in Hawaii. She declined, mindful of the tragic loss she had experienced earlier.

At the seminar, she reflected on her decision and changed her mind. She rang him but because of the time difference with New York, he was asleep and so she left him a voicemail message saying that she loved him and that she would accept his marriage proposal.

At 8.58 am on September 11, 2001, the gentleman rang her back. He told her that he had received her message and that he loved her dearly. He also said that he was in the office and that the building was on fire. There was no way he would survive, or for them to see each other again. But he felt good that he had helped her learn a valuable lesson ~ that one should live life to the fullest, to not hold back and to take every opportunity to live the moment.

Another 90-minute video of an interesting story concerning a Norwegian lady and her father will be shown at Ivory 11, Level 4, Holiday Villa, Subang at 1.30 pm on Saturday, March 26. You are welcome to attend the session and participate in the discussion following it.

Career Opportunity Presentation
Financial Planning ~ Your Passport to Financial Freedom!

The function of an insurance agent is to act on behalf of an insurance company to acquire insurance business from the customers or prospective customers of the insurance company (insurer). Unlike the insurance broker who represents the buyer of insurance, insurance agents represent the insurance company, essentially to sell insurance policies.

Insurance agents can act on behalf of not more than two general insurance companies and one life insurance company at a time. To be a general insurance agent, one must sit for and pass the Pre-Contract Examination for Insurance Agents (PCEIA) , Part A & Part B, and to be a life insurance agent, one must pass Part A & Part C of the PCEIA. The examination is conducted by The Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII). The PCEIA assures that any person who becomes an insurance agent has the necessary basic knowledge to promote and sell insurance to the general public on behalf of the insurance company which they represent.

After passing these examinations, the general agent will have to register himself/herself with the Persatuan Insuran Am Malaysia (PIAM), and the life agent with Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) before he can transact any insurance business. Upon registration by PIAM, general insurance agents are required to comply with a set of rules known as the General Insurance Agents Registration Regulations (GIARR) and a code of ethics for general insurance agents.

An insurance agency can be operated either on a part-time, spare-time, free-time basis or full-time. In today's increasingly sophisticated environment, more and more insurance agents have become professional consultants and full-service financial planners who operate their agency business on a full-time basis. This enables them to concentrate on the business and to provide the best possible service to their clients.

Traditionally, insurance agents are not salaried but are paid by the insurance companies they work for by way of commissions on sales. However, a number of banking groups now own insurance companies which use salaried staff to sell their insurance products.

Life insurance agents get the opportunity to earn passive income as they earn commissions and various bonuses for a number of years after a life insurance policy is sold. If you'd like to find out what opportunities a career in Life Insurance can offer you, do attend the next Life Insurance...
