Facts of the Case:
At about 1250 hrs on Friday, October 21 2011, the Victim stopped his motorcar, a Perodua Kelisa in heavy, still and unmoving traffic outside Jakel and CIMB Bank in Jalan Bunos, Kuala Lumpur and asked his daughter to take over the wheel while he went an Indian music stall outside Mydin along Jalan Masjid India to return a broken CD that he had bought the previous day and get a good copy as a replacement.

After getting the replacement, the Victim ran back to his car which was still outside Jakel and CIMB Bank in Jalan Bunos. In the meantime, some passers-by that are not known to the Victim saw him running with the CD and thought he had stolen it. Then an Indonesian or Malay man with an Indonesian accent shouted “Pencuri.” This triggered a civil commotion. As the Victim tried to drive off, between 15 to 20 male assailants (Malays, Indonesians and Indian Malaysians) surrounded the car and starting smashing the front and back windscreens, side-mirrors and bodywork of the car. Among them and instigating them was this Indonesian or Malay man with an Indonesian accent.

The Indian lady from the music stall where the Victim had bought the CD also came when she saw the commotion and tried to explain to the crowd that the Victim had exchanged the CD and was entitled to it. There was a momentary break in the violence and so the Victim decided to drive off to Dang Wangi Police Station to make a Police Report. As they were people still standing in front and surrounding the car, the Victim had to reverse his car in order to get out of the situation.

Then, the violence started again in earnest and both the Victim and his daughter were hit by flying glass from the front windscreen. When the Victim turned right at the junction at Maybank from Jalan Bunos to Jalan Masjid India, the violence got worse with the assailants attacking the car with malicious intent using wooden poles, metal rods and poles and wooden crates. They even tried to puncture the car tyres by throwing broken pieces of wooden crates with nails sticking out.

They did their best to impede the Victim from going to Dang Wangi Police Station to make a Police Report. The victim and his daughter were in fear of their lives and safety. The Victim decided that the best option was to remain in the car and not get out. A fat Indian man with a metal pole started to use it as a battering ram by repeatedly smashing the front car windscreen. This same fat Indian man later took videos of the Victim while blocking his face with his iPad. The victim tried to call the Police (121) from his handphone at 1253 hrs but could not get through.

From 1256 hrs, the Victim managed to take some videos and still photos of the people surrounding the car. The people include the assailants, passers-by, a photographer (a Chinese man with spectacle and wearing a long-sleeved grey shirt) and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) enforcement officers. Initially, they were out-numbered and totally unable to control the crowd who continued damaging the Victim’s car with malicious intent.

Eventually, more DBKL enforcement officers arrived on the scene. By 1302 hrs, they had gained some control and managed to persuade the crowd to disperse and allow the Victim to drive off to Dang Wangi Police Station to make a Police Report. These idiots should have arrested the assailants but had failed to do so. Maybe DBKL enforcement officers are not trained as well as they should.

Upon arrival at the Dang Wangi Police Station, the Victim was accosted by a Malay man who got off a motorcycle, WUQ 8934. He claimed that the Victim had knocked his motorcycle while reversing and wanted to be compensated. The Victim said that the procedure was for him to make a Police Report so that his Insurer can compensate him if his claims can be proven to be true. The Victim was unaware of having knocked the motorcyclist as his back windscreen (at the material time) was shattered and he could not view through it. Furthermore, his side-mirrors were folded back and askew by the assailants.

The motorcyclist refused to make a Police Report and followed the Victim and his daughter into the Dang Wangi Police Station, shouting and screaming swearwords. When he refused to calm down, the Police had to throw him out of the Police Station. He later went to the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station to make a report (Investigating Officer Sergeant Sagaran). It is believed that the motorcyclist was one of the assailants who hit the Victim’s car with malicious intent and had initiated a civil commotion by instigating others (including the fat Indian man with the iPad) to do the same. The Investigating Officer, Sergeant-Major Shukur, is already in possession of the motorcyclist’s details having obtained it online from Sergeant Sagaran.

Police are also looking for a Chinese man who took photographs of this incident. He can clearly be seen in the video above at 1:14 with spectacles and wearing light grey long-sleeved shirt.

The mob mentality of our society is a sad reflection of our failed criminal justice system that people feel compelled to take the law into their own hands; failure of our national education system and of the Tamil school system for not teaching people basic rights and basic law. The only redeeming factor in this whole episode is that it was a woman ~ a sole lady of courage ~ who faced the mob and acted in our defence. The future of society lies in our mothers, wives and daughters...

The Police already have the details of the owner of WUQ 8934, who I suspect was one of the assailants and had also instigated others to set upon my car.

The fat Indian man with the iPad was the one who used a metal pole as a battering ram to smash my front windscreen. The DBKL enforcement officers where helpless from stopping him. Perhaps, they were inadequately trained. I pray the Polis catch this pundek.

YB Elizabeth Wong Keat Ping, (黃潔冰) (born 9 March 1972) is the Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman and Selangor executive council member in charge of Tourism, Consumer Affairs, and Environment, who is in the People's Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat, PKR). Wong entered the electoral arena as a candidate under the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR, People's Justice Party) during the 12th General Election and on March 8, 2008, Wong created an upset by defeating the incumbent and was elected as the new Selangor State Assemblyman for Bukit Lanjan with a majority of over 5000, the second largest majority won by PKR state assembly candidates in Selangor. Wong is a human rights activist and was involved in activist environmental campaigns.

YB Tony Pua Kiam Wee (Chinese: 潘俭伟, born 1972) is a Malaysian politician, currently the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya Utara. Pua was the former Malaysian CEO of Cyber Village Sdn Bhd, a SESDAQ (SGX secondary board)-listed company. In early 2007, he disposed of all his interests in the company and tendered his resignation to join the Democratic Action Party (DAP).

YB Tony Pua graduated from Keble College, Oxford University with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics under a scholarship from the MTC Foundation in 1994. Prior to that, he received Asean and Shaw Foundation scholarships to pursue his "O" and "A"-Levels in Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College, both in Singapore.

In the 2008 general election, Pua won the Parliamentary constituency of Petaling Jaya Utara on a DAP ticket. He ran against the incumbent, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry for Women, Family & Community Affairs, and Deputy Chief of the Malaysian Chinese Association women's wing. Winds of Change in Indera Mahkota

YB Azan bin Ismail

The word on the ground in Kuantan is that YB Azan bin Ismail, the current Member of Parliament for the Bandar Indera Mahkota constituency in Pahang, representing the People's Justice Party (PKR) in the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition, no longer commands the support of his constituents as he has not made a stand to oppose the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) in Gebeng, which lies within his constituency. In fact, he has been doggedly silent on the issue.

YB Azan was elected to Parliament in the 2008 general election, defeating Salamon Ali Rizal Abdul Rahman of the governing Barisan Nasional coalition by 1,027 votes. He was a member of the PKR's leadership in Pahang before resigning in 2010, citing dissatisfaction with PKR's management.

Lee Chean Chung

In contrast, working hard on the ground to replace YB Azan in Indera Mahkota is PKR's Lee Chean Chung. Born and raised in Kuantan, Pahang, local boy Lee Chean Chung is currently the Research Officer for Kajian Politik untuk Perubahan (KPRU). Fluent in Malay, English and several Chinese dialects, Lee Chean Chung has been very busy building grassroots support in the Bandar Indera Mahkota constituency, not least by campaigning hard for the anti-Lynas campaign.

The Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) relies on the Kuantan Port, a key feature of the East Coast Economic Region (ECER), to import Rare Earth Oxide (REO) concentrate from Mount Weld, located 35 kilometres south of Laverton, Western Australia.

NGO Position Statement on Nuclear Power Plants
11 October 2011

We, the undersigned organizations, strongly call on the Government of Malaysia to abandon its plan to develop nuclear power plants.

Nuclear power plants have proven themselves time and again to be unsafe, unwanted and unnecessary. The nuclear option should not be considered as a solution to our energy needs.

Over the past two days, we have learnt firsthand of the pain and suffering of our Japanese friends affected by the Fukushima disaster. We do not wish the same for our people.

The Japanese nuclear crisis is far from over and we must not ignore this tragic lesson. This preventable tragedy has reignited the call from peoples all over the world to reject nuclear power generation. Enlightened governments have responded to this call
while others are now reconsidering their decisions to adopt nuclear power.

The ethical response we expect of the Malaysian Government is to adopt a precautionary approach as part of its responsibility to our future generations because nuclear reactors will also leave a permanent legacy of hazardous waste.

Malaysia need not go down the nuclear path. A stronger pursuit of energy efficiency and renewable energy would obviate the need for nuclear reactors.

We demand that the Government of Malaysia be fully transparent and consultative in its decision making process on meeting the country’s future energy demands.

Civil society organisations from Japan, South Korea, Australia and Malaysia call on the Government of Malaysia to stop its nuclear power development plan.

The groups said they are convinced beyond doubt that nuclear power has no place in Malaysian’s quest to chart a sustainable energy future.

The groups are Friends of the Earth Japan (FOE-Japan), Citizen Nuclear Information Centre, Fukushima Network for Protecting Children from Radiation, Korea Federation for Environmental Movement (KFEM/FOE-South Korea), Friends of the Earth Australia (FOE-Australia), Friends of the Earth Malaysia (Sahabat Alam Malaysia), Consumers Association of Penang and Third World Network.

Following a two-day public forum (Oct 8 and 9) which provided an insight into the potential of energy efficiency and renewable energy to achieve a healthy energy mix in the near future for Malaysia, they urge the government to increase its support for these sectors instead of spending taxpayers’ money on nuclear technology which has proven time and again to be economically, environmentally and socially harmful.

The forum also heard firsthand of the sufferings of the people of Fukushima from the March 11 tsunami-‐‑triggered crisis that saw the meltdown of the three reactors in the Fukushima
Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Eri Watanabe (Ms), Nuclear and Energy Campaigner, Friends of the Earth Japan said:
“The accident in Fukushima once again reminded us that once a severe accident happens, environmental and social impacts are irreversible.

So far, the Japanese government cannot sufficiently protect their people from radiation. However, the government still continues its policy to promote exports of nuclear power technology. This is morally wrong because its own people are still suffering so much from the accident.

I strongly recommend that the Malaysian government and people rethink the introduction of nuclear energy for your prosperity and for the next generation."

Hideyuki Ban (Mr) of Citizen Nuclear Information Centre (CNIC) said:
“The Japanese Government and electricity utilities insisted that Japanese nuclear power technology is superior. However, Fukushima showed us that they were so wrong.

The fallout from the nuclear reactors contaminated a vast land area, the air and the sea. I want the Malaysian Government and its people to recognise that the Fukushima tragedy could happen to any country that embraces nuclear power.”

Representative of the Fukushima Network for Protecting Children from Radiation, Seiichi Nakate (Mr) said:
“I would not want Malaysian people to experience the tragedy that people in Fukushima are now facing. I came here only because I wanted to tell you this. In Fukushima, more than 100,000 families have been separated because of the nuclear accident. And even now, one million people still live in contaminated areas with deep sufferings and anxiety.

Human beings must abandon nuclear power plants. We must not allow a single nuclear power plant to be built anymore.”

Kim Hye Jeong (Ms), Executive Coordinator of KFEM said:
“Korea’s nuclear technologies are questionable as shown by its track record of 646 minor and major accidents in a period of 32 years since the installation of its first nuclear power plant in 1978.

“We are appalled that the APR1400 nuclear reactor that has yet to be commercially tested in South Korea might just be the type of reactor that the Malaysian government is considering
buying from us.

We condemn the South Korean Government’s plan to export such sub-standard technology to a developing country like Malaysia under the pretext of international technical cooperation,” she added.

Dr Jim Green, National Nuclear Campaigner of FoE-Australia said:
“Australian uranium was used in the Fukushima reactors that were destroyed in March. We Australians do not want to be responsible for similar disasters in Malaysia.”

He also said over a 50-year lifespan, a single nuclear reactor is responsible for 1,500 tonnes of high level nuclear waste and a staggering 35mil tonnes of low level radioactive tailings waste. The Malaysian government should not bequeath this toxic legacy to future generations.

He further reminded that nuclear power is the only energy source with the capacity to produce weapons of mass destruction.

“It is far better to choose energy efficiency and renewables,” he added.

Following the forum, several Malaysian civil society groups present pledged to work together in a concerted campaign against the proposed nuclear power plants.

I advocate entomophagy.

What?
Entomophagy is the term used to describe the process of eating insects as a food source. Currently, many universities study this process, including Illinois State University, Purdue University, and the University of Wisconsin, using the term "microlivestock" to categorize the insects that can be eaten.

Why?
Insects are delicious and the cheapest source of natural protein, requiring less land and feed than raising farm animals. By weight, termites, grasshoppers, caterpillars, weevils, houseflies and spiders are better sources of protein than beef, chicken, pork or lamb according to the Entomological Society of America.

Insects are also easy to raise, and to harvest, and they are highly nutritious to eat. For example, a termite contains approximately 14 grams of protein and 36mg of iron. In comparison, lean beef contains 27 grams of protein and only 4mg of iron. Additionally, if you are looking to add calcium to your diet, try eating crickets. One cricket contains 13 grams of protein, 10mg of iron, and 76mg of calcium. Overall, insects provide a good source of nutrients and when prepared properly, can be quite tasty as well.

While insects are high in protein, low in cholesterol and relatively low in fat, they are also a "clean" food source because many feed off fresh plants. For example, grasshoppers and crickets eat fresh, clean, green plants whereas crabs, lobsters and catfish eat any kind of foul, decomposing material as a scavenger (bottom water feeder).

Along with nutrition comes the added benefit of good taste. Taste is also a factor in selecting insects, as many can be eaten either raw or cooked, while others are used as ingredients to produce other food items, such as being used as an additive to flour.

If Malaysians could tolerate more insects in what we eat, farmers could significantly reduce the amount of pesticides applied each year. It is better to eat more insects and less pesticide residue. Besides, the only more eco-friendly alternative to getting our proteins from insects rather than from mammals is to go vegetarian.

Additionally, using insects in recipes has risen as consumers begin to realize the benefits gained by using this alternative protein source. While organizations such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continue to monitor and limit the amount of insecticides allowed on crops, some US farmers are looking to cultivate insect microlivestock as a food source. These farmers are hoping to enlighten the western countries about the advantages of using insects for food.

Where?
For now, entomophagy has yet to become a day-to-day activity for most people in Malaysia in spite of the superior nutritional content of edible insects compared to other animals. Other cultures around the world, notably in nearby Thailand, have made insects a main ingredient in their diets, providing an excellent source of protein. Insects are an inexpensive substitute for meat in many developing countries.

Although eating insects intentionally is not yet a common practice in the United States and Europe, it is popular among the peoples of many other regions of the world including Africa, Asia, Australia, Mexico and South America. These areas have developed specific recipes for certain regional insects and include the eating of insects as part of their daily diet.

There are 6 million species of insects in the world. Not all insects are edible. Some insects are toxic and may create allergy problems. Because not all insects can be eaten, it is important to know which insects are used for food and how they are being prepared. Over 1,000 insect species are eaten by humans world wide. By region, the following insects are commonly eaten:

Africa. In Africa, popular insects to eat include termites, grasshoppers, caterpillars, beetles, ants, and locusts. Termites are often eaten raw or fried, or are made into a cooking oil. Grasshoppers, caterpillars, and young beetles are fried and ants are eaten either raw or ground-up into a paste. Locusts are typically boiled and salted prior to eating.

Asia. All over Asia, the giant waterbug, which is gathered by farmers at night near water sources, is roasted whole and eaten as a delicacy. Meanwhile, in Korea, fried locusts are popular as a food source and in the Philippines, many insects including ants, beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, katydids, locusts, and larvae from the dragonfly are fried or boiled prior to eating. In Papua New Guinea, chefs typically prepare insect grubs either roasted or boiled to serve as a main meal.

Australia. Home to many large colonies of termites, some of which have termites as long as three inches in length, Australians favour these insects and prefer to fry them prior to eating.

Mexico and South America. In Mexico, grasshoppers are a popular food source especially when fried prior to eating. Fried grasshoppers are also canned commercially and sold in supermarkets and local grocery stores. The agave worm is also a popular insect to eat, whether swallowed whole in a preserved state in a bottle of tequila or eaten cooked inside of a tortilla. In Columbia, South America many insects are eaten including ants, termites and palm grubs. Insects are often cooked prior to eating or are used as ingredients in recipes.

In the United States, certain Native American tribes commonly ate insects. Specifically, in the western United States, pupae of the fly known as the Mono Lake alkali fly (Ephydra hians) was eaten. This food was called "Koo-tsabe." Nowadays, Americans can purchase insects commercially to eat from insect supply firms, bait shops, and from some pet shops. Typically, ants, crickets, mealworms, and grasshoppers are most commonly used for food although certain people enjoy eating insect larvae, especially from moths and yellow jackets. The most popular way to eat insects in the United States, however, is to deep fry pieces of them prior to serving.

Who?
As far as I know, the Iban in Sarawak are the only Malaysians that eat insects ~ sago beetle larvae.In general, insects provide a high source of protein and are relatively inexpensive to purchase in many developing countries as compared to meat products. Typically, the insects that are most popular to eat are those that can be gathered quickly and in large amounts.

I hope to remove the negative stigma associated with eating insects and to show people just how healthy, and good tasting, eating insects can be. As the popularity of eating insects grows, many chic restaurants will open to that cater specifically to those who enjoy eating insects. Already in Singapore, there are restaurants that serve larvae and scorpions and seat sell-out crowds nightly.

1. Do you consider rubber plantations to be a kind of forest?
Rubber and oil palm plantations are good examples of monocultures lacking biodiversity. In our tropical Malaysian rainforests, there is an average of 800 different trees species per hectare. They support an even greater number of insect and animal species. When we clear-cut our virgin jungles, we destroy the habitat that supports a rich biodiversity of plant and animal life. In oil palm plantations, you can find only handful of animal species, mostly rats and ayam hutan that eat fallen palm fruits and snakes that eat the rats and ayam hutan and that’s about it. Rubber plantations are possibly even worse. The only thing rubber and oil palm plantations have got going for them is that they act as carbon sinks, sequestering carbon dioxide and storing the carbon as cellulose. So, to answer your question, yes, rubber plantations are a kind of forest. The artificial kind that does not support wildlife and the natural biodiversity found in our natural forests.

2. Do you agree that there should be mandatory public hearings before a forest reserve is excised/degazetted?
Of course, not only should the hearings be made public, but all interested stakeholders must be given an opportunity to be heard and their views considered, incorporated and implemented.

3. What is your stand on the importation of radioactive materials into Malaysia?
What sorts of radioactive materials are we talking about? If you’re talking about radioactive sources for medical diagnostic and industrial imaging purposes, I’m all for it. I’m not a Luddite. We should be progressive and use appropriate technology to benefit not just mankind but the planet as a whole. If you’re taking about rare earth ore that contains radioactive thorium with a half-life of 14 billion years ~ that’s longer than the age of your universe ~ then my answer is a vehement “No! No! A thousand times No!”

4. Do you agree that the Lynas project in Gebeng should go ahead?
Save for employing 350 factory workers, there is financial benefit to Malaysia as Lynas would be given a 12-year tax holiday. After 12 years, Lynas would leave Malaysia, leaving behind a big radioactive mess that going to cost innocent lives, millions of ringgit and years to clean up; like what Mitsubishi Chemicals did with Asian Rare Earth. Will we not learn? When we’re taken for a ride the first time, it was the other person’s fault for being a crook. When we’re taken for a ride a second time, its our own fault for being so stupid in not learning from our mistakes.

5. Do you think Malaysia should have a nuclear power station?
I used to think so. I don’t see our population nor our need for electricity decreasing and I had believed that nuclear fission would buy us time until we get nuclear fusion into fruition. But there is a fundamental issue with nuclear fusion that inherently cannot be solved. It’s called the containment issue. The nuclear fusion reaction is so hot, so intense, that nothing can contain it. Then I realized we already have a nuclear fusion reactor that’s at a sufficiently safe distance away, and what’s more, the energy it creates is already being transported to us for free. We only have what the telco industry calls "the last-mile problem" to solve, to capture this energy and use it.

Yes, I’m talking about the Sun. The Sun is mostly hydrogen gas being squeezed together at enormously huge pressure by its own gravity to form helium. (Chemically, about three quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen, while the rest is mostly helium. Less than 2% consists of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon, iron, and others). It is this reaction that is a nuclear fusion reactor giving off huge amounts of energy in the form of sunlight and heat.

Instead of investing money in exploiting fossil fuels, which are finite yet decreasing assets, we should be investing in developing and making cheap solar panels and solar heaters. This is still a young field. In fact, it was only in August 2011 that a 13-year-old boy, Aidan Dwyer, made a major design breakthrough by designing a super-efficient solar array based on the Fibonacci series.

Credit must also be given to a Malaysian architect and inventor, Teoh Siang Teik, who invented, the world’s highest efficiency (40.7%) thermosyphon solar heater microsolar system.

In his book Critical Path, Buckminster Fuller likens fossil fuels to a fixed deposit in the bank that is earning negative interest as we slowly but surely deplete this finite resource. Solar energy, on the other hand, is like free money that is being credited into our current account every day, the only proviso being that if we don’t use it, we lose it and have to wait for tomorrow’s deposit.

Fukushima was a massive wake up call. We should follow the example of Germany and other enlightened nations in investing in solar and other renewable energy technologies such as the Gorlov Helical Turbine which can be placed in gravity-fed water mains pipelines to generate electricity.

6. Should petrol subsidies be continued or abolished?
Petrol subsidies should be abolished. It is about time that consumers feel and therefore understand the true cost of fossil fuels instead of living in a delusionary world of artificially cheap fuel.

I am against subsidies because people should learn that they need to pay for the actual cost of things and get away from the handout, subsidy mentality that is currently so pervasive in Malaysian society.

Once people accept this, we will have less consumerism and materialism in our society because we will learn to live to fulfill our needs, and not our wants. We must all learn to live within our means.

When we have subsidies, money is taken from all tax-payers to subsidize those who consume the goods that are being subsidized. It is grossly unfair that tax-payers who use public transport to be subsidizing all those fat cats, Datuks, Tan Sris, and aristocrats in their Mercedes, BMWs, Brabus, Porsches, Roll-Royces, Bentleys and what not. Those who drive luxury cars should also be able to afford to maintain them and that includes buying petrol at market prices.

Kalau tak mampu, janganlah nak berlagak macam boleh mampu.

So as not to burden the lower income group, a good, integrated and affordable public transport system must first be in place. we should have an infrastructure in place to encourage the use of bicycles.

I drive a 850 c.c. Kelisa. It meets my needs. I may want a Gallardo, an R8, a DB9, a Cayman, an SLK, an XKR and an Elise; one for each day of the week, but they'd be feeding my ego more that fulfilling my needs.

7. Should the government provide subsidies for water supply or should the public be asked to pay more for their water?
The pricing model that is currently being practised in Selangor makes much sense. The first RM6 worth of water consumed is waived. I daresay it costs more to collect this RM6 that its simply not worth the exercise. Then, the rate gets progressively higher the more one consumes a month.

Also, home should be designed with rainwater harvesting systems. A great deal of money and care is spent in ensuring that safe water is pure and safe to drink. And it’s such a waste to use in to flush the toilet and water the plants, to even to wash the car. Its like using bottled mineral water to take a shower. This is where a rainwater harvesting can be used to complement and thereby reduce the volume treated water consumed daily.

8. Do you agree that forests and peatlands can continue to be cleared for oil palm plantations?
No. More efficient use of existing land should be implemented instead. Efforts be done in introduce more species into the monocultures. Methods such as inter-cropping with fruit trees and the planting of bamboos, and various members of the ginger family such as kantan, lengkuas and cardamom along streams and waterways should be made to increase the biodiversity and also to increase food production.

9. Do you eat shark’s fin soup?
Yes, but my children don’t. I don’t smoke, but most Malaysian males do. I eat insects but most Malaysians react with shock and horror when I tell them I advocate entomophagy (see separate article) and ask them to eat a grasshopper. My mother eats turtle eggs which I did as a child but now don’t. Some habits die hard. We recognize that some things may take a generation to change. The important thing is to start the process by creating awareness and educating people of the issues.

10. Can we achieve Prime Minister Najib Razak’s pledge to reduce the country’s carbon emission intensity by 40%?
I don’t see how if we continue to build power plants that run on fossil fuels and continue to subsidize petrol. Making grand declarations of intent at conference may give a warm glow and feel good feelings but where is the substance? What realistic measures have already been implemented have have actually reduced carbon emissions?

11. Do you think Malaysia should retain 50% of its land area under forest cover as previously pledged by Tun Mahathir?
We should more. Declare an immediate and permanent moratorium on deforestation. Have proper enforcement with severe penalties. Hudud even.

12. What do you think is the current forest cover for Malaysia?
Malaysia's land surface was once almost entirely covered with forest. Today, forests still cover about 59.5% of the total land area. However, deforestation is a major concern as the country is still rapidly developing. In the 20 years from 1983 to 2003, there was a reduction of about 4.9 million hectares of forest cover in Malaysia. This is about 4 times the size of Singapore - an average of 250,000 hectares of forest being lost annually! Apart from deforestation, the remaining forests face threats from unsustainable logging, illegal removal of forest products and encroachment. Source: WWF Malaysia

13. Do you think the reintroduction of local elections would improve environmental management in the country?
Yes, if we include Local Agenda 21 as part of the elected representatives' key performance index (KPI).

Adakah masyarakat Cina di Kuantan membantah Lynas kerana mereka hendak tolong-menolong negara Cina?

Walaupun mereka bukan bumiputra, sudah tentu boleh kata hampir semua daripada mereka adalah dilahir di Malaysia. Barangkali boleh kata kebanyakan dari mereka ada mak-bapa yang dilahir Malaysia dan mungkin boleh kata ada sebahagian dari mereka yang ada nenek-datuk pun dilahirkan di Malaysia.

Adakah mereka pengkhianat negara? Adakah mereka penderhaka tanahair? Betulkah masyarakat Cina bukan sebenarnya takut pasal kesihatan dan keselamatan anak cucunya yang akan dilahir di Malaysia juga tapi nak tolong negara Cina pula? Negara itu yang mereka tak pernah lawat, tak kenal dan tak sayang.

Dengan penuh kehormatan kepada Yang Amat Berhormat Menteri Besar Pahang Adnan Yaakob dan dengan sikap berbanyak terima kasih atas kesudian beliau buat temuduga dengan kami, saya mesti cakap saya sangat tidak setuju dengan pendapat beliau tentang kenapa masyarakat Cina membantah kilang Lynas.

Saya percaya orang Cina membantah kilang ini sebab orang Cina adalah kaum yang menderita zaman kelapanpuluhan di Bukit Merah. Orang Cina telah dengar cerita pasal apa yang telah terjadi di negara Cina mananya ada wilayah besar mana apa-apa pun tak boleh hidup akibat industri tanah jarang ini.

Dan saya harap orang Melayu yang masih duduk atas pagar dalam isu ini akan berpendapat sama dengan orang Cina bila mereka belajar apa yang ramai orang Cina sudah belajar.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Is the Chinese community in Kuantan protesting against Lynas because they want to help China?

Even though they are not the original inhabitants of Malaysia, of course, we can say that almost of them are born in Malaysia. Probably we can say that most of them have parents that were born in Malaysia and maybe we can even say that some of them have grandparents born in Malaysia.

Are they really traitors? Are they really betraying the country of their birth? Is it really true that the Chinese community are not in fact concerned about the health and safety of their generations to come that will be born in Malaysia just as they were but rather want to help China? That country that they have never visited, know nothing about and have no love for?

With full respect to The Right Honourable Chief Minister of Pahang, Adnan Yaakob, and with great gratitude for his willingness to grant us this interview, I have to say that I strongly disagree with the opinion of the Chief Minister regarding the reasons why the Chinese Community are protesting against this Lynas factory.

I believe that the Chinese are protesting against this factory because it was the Chinese that suffered in the 1980's in Bukit Merah. The Chinese have already heard the stories about what happened in China where there is a huge territory where nothing can live as a result of this rare earth industry.

I hope the Malay people that are still sitting on the fence on this issue, will see things the same way that the Chinese people do when they learn what many of the Chinese have already learned.

Because radiation doesn't care what race you are. It can kill anybody.

The REFERENDUM on The Setting Up and Operation of Lynas Advance Materials Plant (LAMP) In Gebeng Kuantan

On behalf of approximately 700,000 citizens that reside within the 30 km radius of Gebeng;

We begin by quoting the following exert from an article titled The Issue of Residual Thorium & Uranium from Rare-Earth Ore Processing Posted By Jack Lifton on March 11, 2011 @ 12:25 pm in News Analysis, Rare Earths

“In the rare-earths sector a very important and under-reported story is coming to the surface. A senior executive at a rare-earth junior said to me at PDAC in Toronto earlier this week that the 800-pound gorilla in every rare-earth venture’s room, was the radioactive thorium and/ or uranium-bearing waste that will be generated by the extraction, separation, and refining operations that are the supply chain steps immediately following mining and mechanical concentration.

It is my understanding that Lynas’ first business plan for the Mt Weld operation put out in 2005 called for only raw ore to be produced in Australia. Every further step in the supply chain was, in that plan, to be done in China, and, at the conclusion the idea was that China would either ship finished rare-earth metals to Lynas’ customers or buy the rare-earth metals at that point or earlier in the supply chain from Lynas. This original Lynas plan faltered on the failure of the Chinese to give guarantees that the ore would remain the property of Lynas, after Chinese work product was added to it. Chinese law on the ownership of natural resources by the State was not specific on when such ownership vested if the goods were imported, and this made institutional investors gun-shy of the project.

One of the major advantages of Lynas’ original plan was that any radioactive residue would have been a Chinese disposal problem, and in those days the Chinese were more flexible about that than they have now become.”

OBJECTIVE
We are aware that the IAEA expert panel is here in Malaysia to investigate the health and safety aspects of LAMP, specifically to review the radiation safety aspects of the facility in relation to relevant international radiation safety standards and good practice.

We are also very aware of the fact that the panel will not engage in policy type of discussions.

However the arguments that we are putting forth in our representation today, will be to put across a strong message to the panel that whatever technical solutions and recommendations being proposed to the government of Malaysia by the panel of international experts at the end of this fact finding mission with not function as a working model here in Malaysia.

Recommendations on LAMP’s safety does not rest on technical recommendations and inputs but rather must be made on a holistic approach on the moral ground by putting people’s safety, health and lives above others.

1) HEALTH CONCERNS
The information contained in the above article is not of a new discovery. We, the Kuantan Concern Citizens are very much aware of the hazard that lies in the rare earth processing industry which has cause a bad mark in the history of Malaysia. During the 1980’s a similar industry, where a company by the name of Asian Rare Earth (owned by a Japanese company, Mitsubitshi Corporation) had cause a disastrous and irreversible impact to humanity and surrounding ecology. Many children and adults succumbed to illness caused by cancer which includes leukemia and the like. There is also living proof of children who were born deformed or mentally handicap. Cases of fetus which died during pregnancy were also recorded. The village was somehow deserted and not livable. The clean up of the radioactive waste had just been taken recently by the government and the owner of the company and cost the owner over RM 300 million.

Lynas, which do not have any track record in processing rare earth prior to this, to this date had not been able to show any concrete measure in the handling of the radioactive waste generated from the separation process in Gebeng, Kuantan. Although Lynas and the Malaysian government tried to downplay the amount of thorium generated by claiming that the ore from Mount Weld contains less thorium in comparison with the ore used by Asian Rare Earth, the volume that LAMP proposed to process here in Gebeng are many times more than of Asian Rare Earth.

We have no doubt whatsoever that the total accumulated thorium will be very much higher than what was produced in Bukit Merah. Lynas’s claims on having the best engineering practice and safer processing technology were never proven as there is no existing LAMP anywhere prior to this nor is there any existing refinery facility outside China which can be benchmarked to. Until today, Lynas has failed to produce a concrete long term radioactive waste management plan

Considering the overall harm and damages that can be caused by thorium and many other element produced such as uranium waste, radon & thoron gas, and many other hazardous chemicals used in the process, we strongly believe that this facility is not safe. The magnitude of damage to mankind and the environment will be enormous. It will cause an irreversible impact to the community. We definitely will not allow ourselves and our future generation to be the GUINEA PIGS or LAB RATS to the massive experiment which Lynas plan to conduct on humanity. It is morally wrong and a violation of human rights to living a healthy live, to begin an operation on a process which is not proven to be safe especially so when it is near to residential areas in a densely populated area within it’s 30 km radius.

History has shown that industry owner will easily get away from their liability and responsibility because it is not easy to prove that any health impact in future is directly link to their waste generation due to the lack of enforcement in our country. We certainly refuse to shoulder the risk of the harm that this plant poses to our health and the environmental threats to our future generation. We do not want our homeland to be the dumping ground of an irresponsible business entity. Economic gain shall NOT and NEVER take priority over safety and health of human being.

2) ECONOMIC CONCERNS
Kuantan is a tourist destination with beautiful beaches and scenic sights. Many of the local residents immediately next to the LAMP site thrives on the tourism industry by being proprieters of budget hotels and homestays as well as managing the seafood industry to cater for the needs of locals and tourists alike. At the same time Kuantan also harbours one of the largest fishing port in Malaysia which registers more than 390 deep sea trawlers at it’s docks. The stigma that this industry brings will certainly bring a heavy blow to the local residents and Kuantan will not be an attractive destination for tourist anymore. Even right now as we sit here in this meeting, the prices of property in Kuantan have spiraled down. Not to mention the cost of health insurance that will be burdensome to the Kuantan tax payers. The Kuantan Local Council has signed an undertaking to adopt the Local Agenda 21 in support of sustainable development way back in the year 2001. Thus, approving LAMP without prior consultation with the public and the stakeholders in Kuantan is a totally unacceptable act and contravenes the principles of sustainable development adopted in Local Agenda 21.

3) LAX ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS
Specifically with regards to this industry, Malaysia does not have stringent environmental laws to protect our Environment. Even the regulator for LAMP project will be the AELB (Atomic Energy Licensing Board) as compared to the EPA in Australia or the US.

4) ENFORCEMENT ISSUES
There are always issues regarding slack enforcement as well as corruption in this country (the Corruption Perception Index for Malaysia being at 56 out of 178 countries is testimony to this fact). Even if Malaysia imposes fines on Lynas (a 100% Australian owned company) for non compliance, whatever the amount will be peanuts compared to the total export value of RM8 billion a year that Lynas will be enjoying.

5) LYNAS’S CREDIBILITY AND INTEGRITY
Lynas’s credibility is greatly questionable
(i) Even in Australia, Lynas has a record of non compliance to the Safety Standards set in the original works approval for (Environmental Assessment Report – Amendments to works approval W4440/2008/1 regards tailings storage facility of their Concentration Plant in Mt Weld)
(ii) Lynas has been misleading the public by providing the Malaysian public as well as the Malaysian authorities with incomplete or skewed information.
(iii) Lynas is using Chinese standards in Malaysia as opposed to what they claim that they adhere to strict IAEA standards. By using Chinese standards (GB9133-88), they get away with their claim that the waste is NON RADIOACTIVE since the specific radioactivity level of their waste is at 61 Bq/g ( the limit in Chinese Standards is 74Bq/g while the limit in Australia and by IAEA standards is 1 Bq/g) The RIA report dated June 2010 confirms the specific radioactivity level of the waste.

6) SIGNED PETITION From the Kuantan Folks
Copies of 51,000 plus petition collected from Kuantan alone (from 15th March – 30th May 2011) suffice to impress upon the panel the grievance of the Kuantan public. This forms an integral part of the referendum.

EXPECTED OUTCOME
The Citizens of Kuantan are not opposed to development. However, we would like to assert strongly that the development we desire is in the form of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

Therefore, we demand the government of Malaysia to stop Lynas from operating its rare earth processing plant in Kuantan or anywhere in Malaysia. We do not have faith that whatever recommendations given by the panel can be and will be complied to. We do not want to face a radioactive problem in our backyard when Gebeng is turned into an onsite radioactive waste dumping ground for LAMP forever. We certainly do not want to subject ourselves or our family members to severe health threats while Lynas make their way to the bank, laughing...

Our expected outcome from your mission here in Malaysia will be that we expect you to advise the government of Malaysia as well as the state government of Pahang that they have made a mistake in giving approval for LAMP to be constructed in Gebeng. Never the less it is not too late for the Malaysian authorities to make the right moral decision for the Concerned Citizens, all 700,000 living within 30 km radius of LAMP which is NOT to ISSUE an Operating License due in September.

I also trust that the panel will make it’s decision based on conscience, putting lives and environment first before profits, as the lives of the citizens are of paramount importance, priceless and totally not negotiable.

Your Excellency,

We, concerned citizens of Malaysia, are of the understanding that Lynas Corporation has made one or more payments to the Malaysian Government.

We suspect and fear that this has somewhat helped to fast track the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) approval process - without public knowledge and through a very loose Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) despite a complex and hazardous project.

Under Malaysia's Official Secrets Act, we will have little, if any, hope of getting any truth out of our Government, even though this matter is of utmost national interest.

In the interests of both Malaysia and Australia, both Lynas and our Government should be transparent about the approval process.

As Australia has been a strong advocate of good governance and is committed to stamping out corruption, we call upon your good Government to compel Lynas Corporation to adhere to its stated value of honesty and transparency to reveal the deal it has struck with the Malaysian Government and also to make all payment records public. This is of interest not only to all Malaysians but also to the Australian shareholders of Lynas Corporation.

We trust that the Australian Government is committed to protecting the good name of Australia and will not risk one corporation's headlong quest for profit , at the expense of the health of Malaysians and the local environment, to tarnish the good reputation of Australia.

We therefore urge the Australian Government to investigate Lynas Corporation for any possible wrongdoings in its dealings with the Malaysian Government. We were appalled and disgusted to learn that Lynas Corporation had offered a job to the soon-to-be-retired Director-General of the Malaysian Atomic Agency Licensing Board (AELB), Yang Berbahagia Datuk Raja Abdul Aziz Raja Adnan, by his own admission. I am sure you will agree with me that such an offer is tantamount to fair dinkum conflict of interest, collusion and corruption.

ELECTRICITY DEMAND IN SABAH

There is no doubt there is an electricity shortage in Sabah. Or else there won't be so many blackouts. So there is a need for electricity to meet current demand as well as for future growth and development.

How much electricity do we need? It depends on whether we want to have all out industrialization (more electricity is needed) or go for sustainabale development (less is needed). Let's look at these two scenarios using China and New Zealand as case studies.

CHINA
China has decided to go for all out industrialization. it is already "factory to the world" making every kind of product for every country in the world from low-end cheap commodity items to high-end high-tech items. It has a large population and hence large workforce. This means cheap labour. Labour is also cheap because it is relatively uneducated. The higher the education level of the workforce, the higher the wages and the higher the labout cost. But as its workforce gets more educated, wages will rise in tandem.

Electricity is China is being generated by a number of sources. Coal-fired power stations have been the mainstay. They are also a source of environmental pollution, spewing sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide into the air. As this is not enough, China has also hydro-electricity and nuclear power plants (28 more are under contruction now in China; seven in Vietnam, which is also undergoing rapid economic development, by the way). The Three Gorges dam in China has received a lot of flak from environmentalists due to the environmental impact. The truth is, hydro-electricity on a large scale has huge environmental impact, mostly negative. After 70 years or so, dams silt up and become unuseable. The Hoover Dam on the Colorado River in the US is a case in point. Mini-hydro is a better solution from an environmental point of view. More on China energy outlook here.

NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand has opted for zero industrialization as a matter of policy. This is because it is has a small (but well-educated) population. It is far from major markets (its small population isn't much of a market) so it doesn't make much sense to manufacture anything for export due to its remote location in the South Pacific. New Zealand practises sustainable development. No industrialization means it focuses on the service industry as a source of income. Tourism and education are the mainstays. New Zealand maintains it natural environment and this is what attracts the tourists to New Zealand, not Disneyland-like theme parks, not casinos. White-water rafting, trout fishing, geysers. A worldclass education system means it attracts foreign students to its universities.

Not opting for industrialization means New Zealand's energy needs are less. It is fortunate enough to have geo-thermal energy. More about New Zealand energy outlook here.

SABAH ENERGY
To me, Sabah is closer to the New Zealand model than the China model. This means we should take pointers from what New Zealand has done.

The coal-fired power plant in Sabah will be built, despite what the BN government says. This is because when they announced that they would not build it, they did not give an alternative as to how they are going to get the electricity to meet the demand. They are saying that they are not going to build it just to please the voters and also because they are under pressure from environmentalists worldwide. After the elections, they will revive the issue and build it. Also, sources have revealed that Musa Aman has already tied up the contract to transport the coal for the plant for the next 20 years. This contract is worth hundreds of millions. He's not likely to give it up just like that.

So what are the alternative sources of electricity for Sabah, if not the coal-powered power plant?

• Hydro-electricity from Bakun
Building power transmission lines from Bakun wlll also have an environmental impact
• Sabah gas
Building gas pipe lines wlll also have an environmental impact
• Sarawak gas
Building gas pipe lines wlll also have an environmental impact. In fact, plans are already afoot to build a gas pipeline from the Baram River delta to Kimanis in Sabah

Which of these alternatives are economically viable? Which has the least environmental impact? Remember, gas is a fossil fuel and not sustainable in the long term. Bakun will only last 70 years.
Instead of importing coal for a coal-fired power plant, what's hindering Sabah from having a gas-fired power plant utilizing Sabah's own gas resources? Initially, I had wrongly assumed that the gas pipeline from Bintulu to Kimanis was to bring gas from the Baram River delta to Sabah to generate electricity for Sabah. Instead, it sends Sabah gas to Bintulu. Why is this necessary, when its Sabah that needs the energy?
Are we willing to invest in photo-voltaic panels to harvest energy from the sun? Is wind energy viable? How about mini-hydro? Especially since we do not want to flood Tambatuon and make it into a dam.

Something to think about and come up with answers...

Umno has served up a red herring in the shape of a sex video which was meant
to make us take our eyes off the ball. They wanted us to forget about
Sarawak and its Chief Minister, Taib Mahmud.

The end game of the latest sex video is not an attempt by Umno to hide its
failures or an attempt to bring down opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. The
true intention of Umno is to preoccupy us and bombard us with the details of
this sex scandal so that we lose our focus - Sarawak.

Umno's attempts to discredit Anwar are getting clumsier and cruder by the
day. It is a deliberate attempt at character assasination by people whose
own reputations are themselves sullied.

Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik is one of the people behind this sex video. He
is allegedly a child rapist and child molester. He is sore that in
1994, his ticket to millions was cut short by his sexual
indiscretions. Instead of being prosecuted, Umno kept him firmly in
the fold, possibly as a "sleeper" to do its dirty work in the future.
Perhaps this is what that sex video is all about.

Rahim had allegedly raped a minor. It was Lim Guan Eng, a DAP MP, who was
jailed for sedition when he tried to seek justice for this girl. The girl's
grandmother had pleaded with Lim to help her family. She did not go to the
Umno Malays to help her. That must say a lot about what ordinary Malays
think of the political party which is supposedly theirs. The Umno Malays
maintained an unhealthy silence to protect one of their own.

We do not know if Rahim was put up to this latest scandal by Prime Minister
Najib Abdul Razak. Two decades ago, Rahim escaped a heavy jail sentence by
doing a deal with Mahathir. Now, it is time to return the favour and come to
the defence of Umno.

It is quite possible, that if Rahim had refused to help Umno, new
incriminating evidence from the rape of that girl in 1994 would have
materialised. Who says new material cannot be unearthed at such a late
stage? They did it for Teoh Beng Hock, didn't they? The supposed 'suicide
note' appeared months later, when the inquest into his mysterious death was
nearing its conclusion.

This plan which was hatched by Umno is one of several that surfaced in the
last few months. We had Saiful's personal 'sperm bank' and we've been
entertained by Umi Hafilda Ali's failure at passing the virginity test. Now
we have this sex video.

Getting the people titillated

This red herring, the sex video, has been planned with little games in
place. It has got the people titillated. Is it Anwar in the movie or is it
not? Is it Anwar's doppelgänger or is it the despicable Shazryl Eskay
Abdullah? Why was Carcosa selected? Why were the police slow to act? This is
what Umno wanted - to distract us from Sarawak.

The reality is that Najib wants to hide the problems of Sarawak from us.
Taib Mahmud is in trouble. He is suffering from a two pronged attack by
Clare Rewcastle Brown and her weapons of mass deliverance (WMD) - the
Sarawak Report website which details all of Taib's corruption and crooked
business dealings, and Radio Free Sarawak which broadcasts interviews with
ordinary people who have suffered at the hands of Taib.

The white-haired Taib, dubbed 'The Termite', has attracted much criticism
over his unwillingness to step down or to groom his successors. He has also
been hit by successive waves of accusations of corruption and nepotism. The
anti-graft body Transparency International Malaysia has added its voice in
asking the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the
allegations.

The problem that Najib faces in Sarawak is Taib's reluctance to hand over
the reins. There are some who believe that Taib should not contest the
polls; others feel that only he is capable of holding the coalition together
and delivering the resource-rich state to Putrajaya, which considers Sarawak
and Sabah as its "fixed-deposit" vote bank.

Umno/BN are afraid of Anwar and Pakatan. There is no doubt of that. One has
only to see the police intervention when Anwar was at a gathering in Gombak
last Friday. The more Najib sends the thugs to silence Anwar, the more
moderate Malaysians will end up supporting Anwar.

Anwar has become a symbol of oppression - his own, and ours. He has been
pilloried and punched by the police before. And yet he has managed to drag
himself up from the floor and become stronger.

Anwar being preoccupied with defending himself against this sex video was so
that he would not be able to concentrate on Sarawak.

Taib running scared

Taib is running scared. He has attempted to enter the cyber-world with
disastrous results. One victim of his foray into this cyber-war was the
proofreader at the Borneo Post. He corrected what he thought was a spelling
error and inadvertently directed online readers to the original 'Sarawak
Report' of Clare Rewcastle Brown. He has been sacked. This is Taib's
desperation and ruthlessness at work.

The battle-lines in Sarawak are already drawn. A few days ago, Snap was
exposed as potential political frogs and would have damaged Pakatan in
Sarawak, just like the political frogs which damaged Pakatan in Perak three
years ago.

Sarawak is causing sleepless nights in Putrajaya and also for Mahathir. Even
Daim, who milked Malaysia dry, has now come out of the woodwork to defend
Umno/BN and Najib.

Sarawak has never experienced a more formidable opposition. In the past,
Taib would have been able to intimidate, imprison or eliminate his
opponents, if necessary. Najib's sex video has backfired but there will be
other dirty tactics up BN's sleeves.

Anwar has galvanised Pakatan to such a degree that trying to topple him has
become an impossible undertaking; a string of bounty hunters will get their
shoulders to the task, to repay favours owed to Mahathir.

We can expect more fireworks in the run-up to Sarawak polling day.

PETALING JAYA, March 26, 2011: A group of Christians from the Coalition of Malaysian Christians Petaling Jaya (COMC) has demanded for an immediate and unreserved public apology from the Malaysian Government, the Home Ministry in particular, over the recent episode of impounding and stamping of of 35,100 Bahasa Malaysia bibles.

Such demand is one of the seven Rectifications sought from the Government and the Home Ministry by the Group.

The other rectifications sought are:

To return the Al-Kitab to the publisher and replace them with new Al-Kitab;
That no Al-Kitab be destroyed or further defaced;
That the government bear all costs and give written assurance that such desecration will never happen again;
That the Malaysian Home Ministry will not act on its own without due consultation with the relevant Christian representative organisations;
That due respect is given to the Al-Kitab by consulting the relevant Christian representative organisations before any external text is inserted in the Bible; and
That 30,000 Malay bibles worth RM78,000 imported by the Sarawak branch of global Christian group, The Gideons, be unconditionally released from Kuching port.

The Group’s spokesman Ronnie Klassen read aloud from a prepared statement during a press conference held here, after it lodged a police report at the Petaling Jaya Section 8 Police Station on Saturday.

The police report was aimed chiefly to demand for a thorough investigation into the said episode, so as to determine the true motive behind such an act which the Group considered a gross travesty of the Constitutional guarantee of religious freedom of the Christian community in Malaysia.

“We do not accept conditions that belittle Christian faith and religion and which contravene Article 11 of the Malaysian constitution and also Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948. We will not accept Muslim views on Christianity and its practice and matters of faith as normative, or link the Al-Kitab row to the Catholic Church’s court case on the right to use “Allah” — the Arabic word for God — in its newspaper. The Al-Kitab and the “Allah” court case are separate issues; and the Federal government has no right to ban the Al-Kitab under the law. Such developments as Christianity being singled out as a threat is unacceptable, as there are no such conditions imposed on the holy books of other religions, including Islam. The Coalition of Malaysian Christians (COMC) seek a just and amicable solution to this matter.

“As Christians of both Protestant and Catholic persuasions, we wish to register our deep hurt and outrage at the Malaysian Home Ministry’s unilateral action of desecration of over 5,100 copies of the Al-Kitab (Bible) stamped with serial numbers, government seals and warnings that the books are meant for Christians only.

“We view this as violation of Article 11 of the Malaysian Constitution, Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 and the enshrined rights of Malaysian Christians to practice their faith without restriction. This is the first time in Malaysian history that Scriptures of Christians have been deemed illegal and a security threat,” Klassen articulated.

On the stamping of the confiscated Bibles, Klassen said the Group detested the Home Minister Dato Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein’s response, that such was standard practice and not meant to deface the books.

“We find his statement to be incorrect, untrue and misleading. The Christian community and its representative bodies have never agreed to any wording to be endorsed on Bibles to say that it is only meant for Christians. It is an escalation, interference and subjugation of Malaysian Christians and their right to conduct religious education and worship freely,” he contended.

Klassen who is a well-known Sabah-based blogger cum Church activist further noted that the 1982 order issued under the Internal Security Act 1960 did not state that any form of words had to be endorsed on any copy of the Bible in Bahasa Malaysia.

“The latest letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs dated 15 March 2011 is therefore a set of new conditions imposed on the release of the impounded Bibles which is wholly unacceptable to us. This means that the Bahasa Malaysia Bible is now treated as a restricted item, and made subject to the control of the Malaysian Home Ministry and Government. This is wholly offensive and unacceptable to Malaysian Christians,” he stressed.

“Any person who respects the Holy Scriptures of any religion would be appalled by such high-handed and disrespectful action,” he added.

While noting that the Christian community in Malaysia has always acted in good faith and with great patience to find amicable solutions without compromising their fundamental beliefs, he regretted that such good faith has not been reciprocated by the Government.

“It is the government that has moved the goal posts over the years through a systematic imposition of unreasonable conditions and restrictions. Christians are horrified by the arrogance of the Home Ministry and its officials and the contemptuous act of defacing the Al-Kitab is viewed as a sacrilege,” he concluded.

Just like Sodomy II, this latest sex video is about distraction. The grainy sex video showed a man performing sexual acts with a woman. The idea was to identify the man as Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and hence discredit him.

This article was actually written yesterday (Mar 24), but upon completing the article, I was stunned by the explosive news of the sudden appearance of the trio behind the sex video. Concerned that my article might have been overtaken by this sudden turn of events, I withheld its release yesterday. However, upon a review of the latest events, I find that the technical insights and rationale put forward therein are still valid and pertinent to the issue at hand. I hence present my following article with the hope that it will add to the understanding of this fast evolving drama.

There is one simple way to find out whether ‘Datuk T’s’ pornographic video showing a look-alike of Anwar Ibrahim is a hoax, and that is to go to Anwar’s face book from your own face book account and look for his entries at the time when the video was supposed to be recorded, which is 10:23pm to 10:45pm on Feb 21, 2011.

I just did that, and I found that anwar made entries on that day at 10:40pm, 10:49pm, 10:50pm, for which he received 9 comments, 17 comments, 8 comments respectively. And thereafter, he made another 7 entries, up till 11:028pm. The fact that Anwar was actually posting messages in face book at the relevant time clearly indicates that Anwar couldn’t have been doing what was indicated in the video.

As jokingly exclaimed by Anwar during the press conference on Mar 21, hours after the exposure of the video: How could he be carrying out the sex act and typing on his computer at the same time? Obviously, ‘Datuk T’ had neglected to look up Anwar’s face book before he launched his pornographic piece.

QUESTIONABLE TIME FRAME
Purely on a technical level, another question that puzzled me was: How could so many acts be compressed into the purported duration of 22 minutes as indicated in the video? Journalists who had viewed the video said that the love-making part lasted 17 minutes. This means that within the remaining 5 minutes, the following events had to be completed:

Pre-sex act:

· Anwar look-alike (Mr. X) walked into the room with the conductor who gave instruction to the prostitute who was already waiting there. The conductor left the room.
· The couple undressed.
· Woman went into the bathroom and took a bath, which should include wiping dry with a towel (the undressing and bathroom part of the video was skipped by ‘Datuk T’, but he said the woman took a bath).

Post-sex act:
· Mr.X wiped his lower part with tissue, and went into the bathroom to clean himself, which presumably included washing and wiping dry with a towel.
· Mr. X came out from the bathroom, dressed himself and walked off the room.
It should be obvious that when one tallies up the reasonable time allowed for completing each of these events, the total will far exceed 5 minutes. This conflict of time frames further undermines the credibility of the video clip.

PLOT IMPLAUSIBLE
‘Datuk T’ said that the sex romp took place in a Spa which provides sex in Kuala Lumpur.
Will anyone believe that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim – who has been subjected incessantly to all sorts of cruel and unjust political persecution for the past 13 years, branded as enemy number one, for which the ruling power has been desperate to see that he is politically annihilated – would even condescend to walk into a place of such disrepute at the peak hours, where he would be instantly recognized by almost everyone present there, not to mention having sex with a prostitute in the same place? Haven’t ‘Datuk T’ and the plotters behind him overstretched their imagination, if they think the people would swallow such a story?

‘Datuk T’ also claimed that Anwar sent him to the room to look for his lost watch.
If Anwar had patronized a prostitute in the room, would he be so foolish as to send someone to the room to look for his watch? Wouldn’t that stupid act amount to a virtual confession to others what misdeed he had done there? And wouldn’t that confession spell the end of his political career? Who will believe that Anwar would value the watch more than his family, his political career and the destiny of his country and his people?
Despite the indefatigable effort of the ruling power to fix Anwar all these years, has it produced an iota of evidence of his political or moral misconduct, such as corruption, abuse of power, religious or moral sins?
If Anwar has shown none of these weaknesses, why should Malaysians believe ‘Datuk T’ in preference over Anwar, when what the former has displayed so far is nothing but crass acts of character assassination that serves the evil design of his political masters?

So, how?

So, how?

Is the average Malaysian willing to cut down on electricity consumption? Are they willing to stop using air-conditioning? Are there any architects left who are competent in designing homes with cross-ventilation and air scoops, obviating the need for air-conditioning?

This is the finished product ~ I've added sliced button mushrooms (raw), kerepek ketam as well as the Thai fish sauce, lemon juice and budu.

The Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement (MCLM) Tuesday named human rights lawyer Sreekant Pillai (above) as the second candidate from its movement to contest in the next general election.

The son of the late veteran journalist of M.G.G. Pillai said he was chosen to be independent because "the current Government has nothing more it can offer to the people and the existing parties are not doing what the rakyat wants."

"My father taught me that there is nothing wrong in being idealistic, to always stand for what you believe in and always search for the truth. That is exactly what I am doing now," Sreekant, 37, who is representing the Selangor government in the Teoh Beng Hock inquest, said in a statement.

3) Spend less on the military. Abolish the Navy and Air Force. Have a Coast Guard instead. Piracy and smuggling are big issues facing national security. When was the last time the TUDM plane was used in combat against a foreign aggressor? A TLDM ship? When was the last time Malaysia fought a war? Why are we wasting so much money on nonsense? Why are we not spending money on real issues facing our country? Why buy submarines that can't dive?

As for R&D spending: Increase R&D spending to 4%. Spend money on nuclear energy like fusion and fission. I tend to think of fission as a stop-gap measure until we get fusion going.

Spend more on infrastructure. Fast free broadband, fast ERL-type trains, or double-storey TGV-like trains. LRT for Putrajaya. Extend the ERL from KLIA MTB (Main Terminal Building) to LCCT, Enstek, Seremban and then onto Singapore (the detailed engineering drawings have already been completed and submitted to govt for approval, govt is still pussy-footing around, possibly trying to decide which crony to award the contracts to).

4) Unity is built on understanding and trust, not intolerance, indifference, fear and ignorance. Understanding comes with knowledge and learning, not ignorance. When was the last time Malaysians were taught the customs and culture of the Chinese and Indians? Why are Malaysians not taught how to fold a banana leaf after eating at an Indian banana leaf restaurant? How come so many of us don't even know it makes a difference? Why is it so difficult for a Malay to learn Chinese or Tamil in school? Or a Chinese Arabic? Or an Indian Mandarin? or any Malaysian Spanish or French or German?

I hope the above suffices to initiate a point of departure for discussion.

POLITICAL ECONOMY: Get Rid of Oil Subsidies

Because domestic oil prices are kept artificially low by government subsidies, rising oil prices mean the Malaysian Government has to pay out more in the form of these subsidies.

If we get rid of subsidies, as we well ought to (but gradually, so as not to send shock waves throughout the economy), well, we can use that money to build more:

• schools, colleges and universities (free education to PhD level for all who qualify, regardless of ethnicity or religion or anak siapa/Dato' mana). A poor education system, of which the BN government has no intention of repairing, has made, and will continue to make Malaysia uncompetitive. Malaysia has lost the golden years when both India and China were closed economies, and were therefore not competitors, by not optimising its human resource, who were either underutilised or whose skills were taken up by competitive economies, like Singapore, Canada and Australia, because of its backward-looking, ethnocentric 'bumiputra policy';

• clinics, hospitals (do you know Malaysia has not a single dental hospital?);

• really decent internet infrastructure. Aren't you fed-up with TM's "best effort" nonsense? How about UniFi at ten times the speed and one tenth the cost?;

• really decent public transport systems (more integrated stations with buildings like Kerinchi and UOA Bangsar), more stations in Klang Valley, link Klang with Seremban via Teluk Panglima Garang, KLIA and Enstek via ERL; build 400 km/h MagLev system from Seremban to Woodlands in Singapore; revive Putrajaya LRT system, something PutraJaya Holdings CEO Azlan Abdul Karim has been clamouring for for years (but nobody was listening); a decent railway system for Kota Kinabalu and Sabah;

• make it a statutory requirement that all Government buildings be GBI-certified. There is no reason why we should not deserve or enjoy a better Quality of Living.

OR, we can

• keep an already bloated civil service that is inefficient, corrupt and wasteful afloat. We have not even begun to calculate the liabilities due to these morons for their pensions when they do retire. There appears to be no way to pay those bills. We have past peak oil, and will run out of oil by or before 2018. Oil money used to pay for all the wastage for the past 30 years. Mahathir was no genius. Any idiot can spend oil money, just ask any Arab in Saudi or the UAE...

• and keep spending on dubious projects (submarines that can't dive comes to mind) to feed fat cat political proxies and cronies. A substantial portion of the nation's wealth has been stolen by BN politicians, and currently resides overseas in Private Bank accounts. Corruption is rife, and now the cost of corruption is finally starting to show. Now the poor pay directly for BN's blatant looting.

It all depends on who you vote for at the next General Election, you see.

HEALTHCARE: Dentistry in Malaysia

Malaysians continue to give less importance to oral health than general health. About 90 per cent of Malaysian adults have dental caries, while 75 per cent of children below 16 years of age and 50 per cent of those below 12 years also have dental caries.

This can be attributed to a lackadaisical attitude among Malaysians as far as oral health is concerned. All parties must take an active interest in dental care and not just leave it to the experts, such as dental surgeons. The burden of oral infection and conditions should not be placed entirely on our dental surgeons and the Government. It takes collaborative effort to continue to improving the oral health of Malaysians.

The 2010 National Oral Health Plan (NOHP) was developed in 2000 with the objective of achieving optimum oral health among Malaysians by 2010. The focus was on oral conditions of public health significance. The four oral conditions identified were dental caries, periodontal conditions, oral malignancies and dental injuries.

In developing the Oral Health Goals for 2010, targets set are not merely directed towards disease but also focus on health. To ensure targets set are realistic, reference was made to data from national epidemiological surveys, small-scale local studies as well as the Dental Subsystem under the Health Management Information System (HMIS) of the Ministry of Health. Ten years was considered a suitable time frame for the implementation of the strategies towards achievement of the goals.

In defending the progress made my his Ministry in the past 10 years, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the oral health of Malaysians has improved over the years.

"Today, more than 40 per cent of our 16-year-old schoolchildren [*This figure is contradictory to the figure in the second statement of this article - should be 24%, not 40%*] have never experienced dental caries in their permanent dentition as compared to the early 1970's when only about 15 per cent were free of the problem," he said.

He hoped that dental professionals and the dental industry could work hand-in-hand with the government to empower young Malaysians to be more responsible for their own health. The local dental fraternity must start thinking about the future direction of the dental system and education, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said. He said this was to meet the government's target of one dentist for every 4,000 people in another seven years, compared to the ratio of 1:7,936 currently.

"There are 3,567 registered dental practitioners in the country. We must bear in mind that a large portion of our adult population has yet to be adequately covered by the public sector and much ground still needs to be covered in elevating the oral health status of the population."

Liow said the introduction of the three-year compulsory government service for dentists in 2005 has increased the percentage of dentists working in the public sector from less than 45 per cent to 51.5 per cent.

"With the 12th dental school that is yet to be approved by the ministry, the number of graduates will also be increased from around 200 last year to 665 per annum by 2017. In tandem with that, we are and will be struggling to meet our needs for well-qualified and experienced dental teachers and specialists, not only to teach, but also to do research and provide better quality service," he added.

Malaysia's performance in health has been exemplary and can be used as a benchmark by other developing countries, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said.

He said the salient features of Malaysia's achievements in health were universal access to a comprehensive public health sector, safety net for catastrophic expenditure for chronic illnesses, minimal or no co-payments for services in the public system and health services focused on health promotion and disease prevention with responsive private sector health system.

"Consequently, there have been significant improvements in the health status of our population with reduction in morbidity and mortality and an increased life expectancy," he said. However, he said, the system of financing the present healthcare system could not be sustained because of the many challenges.

The main challenges were a growing public-private dichotomy, relative operational inefficiency between the two sectors, variations in practice and standard of care, rising healthcare cost and changing patterns of health expenditure. The Health Ministry is now working towards reform in the healthcare system where the role of the private sector would be significantly enhanced, he said.

Four levels of policy changes were required to transform the healthcare system, some of which were radical with huge implications, he said, adding that the details are still being worked out and implementation would be done in phases.

"The public will be informed accordingly, but what I would like to stress right now is for all Malaysians to be aware that change is imminent and our workforce must develop appropriate skills to embrace, facilitate and implement that change," he added.

Muhyiddin also urged those in the dental profession to familiarise themselves with the Government Transformation Plan (GTP) roadmap and work in tandem with the government to ensure the success of the proposed healthcare reform.

In the context of the dental profession and practice, there is a need for participation by the dental industry to innovate, develop and manufacture dental services and materials of exceptional quality to compete with the international market.

POLITICAL ECONOMY: Why I am Against Subsidies

I am against subsidies because people should learn that they need to pay for the actual cost of things and get away from the handout, subsidy mentality that is currently so pervasive in Malaysian society.

Once people accept this, we will have less consumerism and materialism in our society because people will learn to live to fulfill their needs, and not their wants. They will learn to live within their means.

Petrol Subsidies
When we have subsidies, money is taken from all tax-payers to subsidize those who consume the goods that are subsidized. It is grossly unfair that tax-payers who use public transport to be subsidizing all those fat cats, Datuks, Tan Sris, and aristocrats in their Mercedes, BMWs, Brabus, Porsches, Roll-Royces, Bentleys and what not. Those who drive luxury cars should be able to afford to maintain them and that includes buying petrol at market prices.

Kalau tak mampu, jangan nak berlagak macam boleh mampu.

Sugar Subsidies
As a nation, we already consume too much sugar. The incidence of dental caries, obesity, diabetes, renal failure is on the rise and constitute a demographic and social time bomb for our country. There is absolutely no nutritional reason why we should drink canned fizzy drinks when all that our bodies need is potable water. One reason why we consume too much sugar is condensed milk. With its high sugar content, condensed milk lasts longer than fresh milk and that is why its use is so prevalent in mamak stalls, in teh tarik, and etc. Reducing subsidies on sugar and implementing a "sin tax" on condensed milk is an idea we should consider to address this issue.

Flour & Rice Subsidies
Together with sugar, salt, milk and salt, flour and rice constitute the Six Deadly White Sins of nutrition. If you need to subsidize, subsidize unpolished brown rice and wholemeal flour (such as attar flour for making chapati). These have the virtue of being nutritious. In Korea, only unpolished rice is sold and as a country, they have the lowest incidence of bowel cancer in the world. This will change the eating habits of Malaysians for the better. People may grumble in the beginning but when they reach 80 and have not been diagnosed with bowel cancer while their white-rice- and white-flour-eating friends have long been buried, they will thank you in their heart.

While milk is recommended for growing children below 18, once people have reached their full height, there is no nutritional reason why we should be drinking milk. Cow's milk is designed by nature to be drunk by calves, not baby or adult humans. There are other sources of calcium for adult females to partake to avoid osteoporosis. Eating prawns together with their shells, as I do, is one of them. The evils of a high sodium diet are well known and need not be elaborated on here.

Conclusion
Tell me why the rest of the tax-payers need to subsidize the top 10% richest people in our country?

What Can Subsidy Money Be Used for Instead?

Wages can only be increased in tandem with an increase in the education level of our workforce.

If you look at low-production-cost countries, they are where they are because they have a large population, with low education levels. These countries produce commodity items with low value-add. They survive on razor-thin margins based on high volumes of production.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have the high-production-cost countries which produce high value-add products. They can produce high value-add products because their workforce are at a higher level of education and can produce Intellectual Property. I'm not just talking about knowledge workers in the IT industry, but about their workforce as a whole. For this, they are paid higher wages. The products they produce costs more as a consequence of this and other higher-cost factors of production.

The way forward for Malaysia, to get out of the poverty trap, is to have a higher educated population. The government should spend more on education and less on military spending. Get rid of the Navy and Marine Police and replace it with a Coast Guard that combines search and rescue missions with border controls (keeping out illegal immigrants and smugglers). Give them fast patrol boats and helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft ~ not submarines that can't dive and ocean-going ships.

There is no bogeyman ~ the war is on poverty and corruption, the enemy within.

I advocate free education for all Malaysians (note I did not include Indon, Rohinga and Filipino illegal immigrants), irrespective of ethnic background, to the level of their ability. If they are good enough to get a place, they are good enough to be given free tuition fees, even up to PhD level.

The questions we face now are:
• What do we do with these illegal immigrants? Do we kick them out? Will their country of origin accept them?
• What do we do with their Malaysian-born children?

It is too easy to say let's kick them out, they are leeches on the rest of us, the "real" Malaysians.

The long-term solution, albeit unpopular and expensive, is to assimilate them and invest in their education, health and welfare as we do for all Malaysians. Human resource is something every government has a moral and civic duty to invest in. When we invest in the education of immigrants, we invest in our future as they are our human resource. When we invest in the healthcare of immigrants, we also invest in our healthcare, because we prevent our whole population from getting communicable diseases.

When we deny immigrants medical treatment for conjunctivitis, tuberculosis, dengue, malaria, influenza, STD, and etc, we are spreading these diseases to the rest of the population.

After all, national borders are an abstract construct and political nicety. It is only an imaginary line drawn on the sands of time.

So, some of the real questions facing us are:
• By what criteria do we decide which illegals to kick out and which to assimilate?
• How are going to pay for the education, health and welfare of those we decide to assimilate?
• How do we do this without opening the floodgates to more illegal immigrants?
• What about legal immigrants? Are we going to discriminate against them because they are of the wrong religion? Are we going to discriminate against foreign wives because they are Shia?

Illegal Immigrant Issue

I have done a little research to find out where are the possible areas in the Philippines and Indonesia that these illegal immigrants are coming from. Of course, southern Mindanao and the islands of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Mapun and the seven Turtle Islands (of Boan, Lihiman, Langaan, Great Bakkungan, Taganak, Baguan and one nameless island) as well as Palawan and Balabac first come to mind.

As for Indonesia, besides Kalimantan, I suspect Natuna and Anambas and islands of the Riau archipelago.

I have posted links to write-ups of these places on my FB wall. Would appreciate some feedback in terms of evidence so that we get our facts right to use as ammunition for the next General Elections. Many thanks!

Democracy is government by the people, for the people.

Oligarchy is government by the few, for them and their cronies only.

If we choose democracy, then we must get it clear in our heads that people come in all shapes and sizes and also with every opinion under the sun. To have a one-size-fits-all policy that pleases everyone is impossible. To have a popular policy that pleases most of the people is also not the best solution. This is because, by their nature, popular policies are short-term and well, frankly, simply vote-buying tactics.

Sustainable Development

What voters and politicians both need to understand is that we need sustainable policies for the long-term, not just with five-year horizons. Just as we do not inherit this Earth from our ancestors but borrow it from our grandchildren, we have to make difficult, even painful, choices for the sake of our sons, daughters and their grandchildren.

Saying "No!" to a coal-fired power plant is one such choice. The price to pay is perhaps power blackouts in the short-term, like what SESB and TNB are saying. It may mean less industrial development and less blue-collar jobs.

The Road Ahead and Way Forward

What we need to do is have a different economic model, one not based on industry but on agriculture and eco-tourism, just like New Zealand. With a population similar to Sabah, long distance from global markets, New Zealand made the choice to not industrialize but to turn its pristine natural beauty into its economic assets. No tourist coming back from New Zealand is not impressed. Everyone has enjoyed a good beef steak or lamb chop from NZ farms (the non-vegetarians among us, that is).

By contrast, why is the local beef or kerbau farming industry so far behind by comparison to New Zealand? I personally find kerbau meat tastier and more tender than beef. Why are we not exploiting kerbau farming as a business activity?

We must focus on making these difficult choices in planning the road ahead. Oil and gas will not last forever. Protesting about petrol subsidy removal is really, when you look at the big picture, just a small side issue.

Questions to Which We Must Find Solutions

What we really need to focus on are issues like:

• How best to develop eco-tourism in Sabah?
• How best to maintain security in Sabah so that we don't get Abu Sayyaf terrorists kidnapping people from island resorts like Sipadan, Mabul and the Turtle Islands Marine Park?
• How best to ensure food security in Sabah?
• Sugar prices are high. Can we grow sugarcane in Sabah? Why not?
• Why is there no agricultural college in Sabah?
• Why are we not commercializing our unique agricultural products like beras wangi, beras hitam, beras merah, toohau, latuk, pisang tembaga, durian merah, Babagon pineapples?
• Why is there no scientific research or agricultural promotion to protect these biodiversity and grow them on a wider scale?
• Are we conducting sustainable fishery or just marine harvesting?
• What are we doing about dynamite fishing?
• Why are we allowing state agencies like SESB destroy our marine parks?
• What sustainable power-generating technologies can we implement now? Mini-hydro? in the medium term? in the long term?

I am sure you would be pleased to add your own to this growing list of questions...

A couple of years ago, a couple of misguided urban tree-huggers, led by a pillock who has probably never climbed a tree in her life, made a huge hue and cry over what they termed as "brutally pruned" angsana trees in Bangsar. What these ignorant clowns didn't know is that such pruning is called pollarding and is a common technique employed by gardeners around the world.

Angsana trees that were pollarded a couple of years ago along Jalan Ara (opposite TMC) in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. At the time they were pollarded, a couple of misguided urban tree-huggers, led by a woman who has probably never climbed a tree in her life, made a huge hue and cry over what they termed as "brutally pruned" trees in Bangsar. Pollarding is a pruning system in which the upper branches of a tree are removed, promoting a dense head of foliage and branches. It has been common in Great Britain and Europe since medieval times and is practiced today in urban areas worldwide, primarily to maintain trees at a predetermined height.

One consequence of pollarding is that pollarded trees tend to live longer than unpollarded specimens, because they are maintained in a partially juvenile state, and they do not have the weight and windage of the top part of the tree. Older pollards often become hollow, and so can be difficult to age accurately. Pollards tend to grow slowly, with narrower growth rings in the years immediately after cutting.

Monkey Business at Khao Luang Cave

The monkeys are free to roam and don't have to worry about their next meal. Every day, people from the town bring them food. Tourists also love the monkeys, hundreds come daily to see the monkeys and many buy fruits from local vendors to feed the monkeys.

The Khao Luang (Royal Hill) Cave is located on Khao Luang Hill approximately 5km north from Khao Wang, near Hua Hin in Phetchaburi province. From the foothill, there are concrete steps leading to the cave entrance.

There are numerous old Buddha figures in Khao Luang.

This statue of a reclining Buddha is huge and is very impressive by its sheer size.

Khao Luang is a small-sized hill having a height of 92 metres at its peak. It is the largest cave in Phetchaburi province and is widely regarded as the most important because it enshrines an ornamental Buddha statue built by King Rama V and dedicated to King Rama III and IV. This hill had been a royal picnic site since the King Rama IV period when Hua Hin was established as one of the royal towns with the construction of a Thai royal summer place in the idyllic seaside town. King Rama V was very fond of this place so that he ordered the refurbishment of several old Buddha figures in the cave.

You can get a sense of the height and size of the cave when you use the human figure at the bottom right as a scale.

On the way up the stairs to the cave entrance, you will undoubtedly meet some of the 2,000 monkeys that live on the hill. In the Buddhist tradition, the Thais revere the monkey as a hero. According to ancient legends, the monkey Hanuman and his army saved a god's wife from the clutches of a demon. The Thais believe that Hanuman never dies and so is a symbol of prosperity and good luck.

About 2,000 monkeys of the long-tailed macaque species (Macaca fascicularis) live on Khao Luang Hill.

And ever since, the long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) of Thailand are free to roam and don't have to worry about their next meal. Every day, people from the town bring them food. Tourists also love the monkeys, hundreds come daily to see the monkeys and many buy fruits from local vendors to feed the monkeys.

“They come close and even climb onto our knees or our necks. You can take photos of the monkeys. The contact with the monkeys is really special and enjoyable. Some are gentle and others are more aggressive. Some seem afraid although they come close. It's really enjoyable,” a visitor from Malaysia commented.

The monkeys, however, can get mischievous and they get into everything and on anyone. "You can never get them to sit still, that's for sure,” his wife added.

Local shopkeepers have huge crocodile soft toys to scare away the monkeys but many tourists buy the toy crocodiles as souvenirs to take home. “When tourists come to visit these caves, you can see the smiles of their faces,” a very pleased local stallholder concluded.

In 1946, following the end of World War II, and faced with the problem of how to use its excess capacity and keep it's many employees busy, who had previously been building such RAF stalwarts as the Bristol Blenheim and Bristol Beaufighter, the Bristol Aeroplane Company moved into the luxury car market.

In 1960 it was persuaded to join with others to form the British Aircraft Corporation (later British Aerospace). At that time the car division (Bristol Cars Ltd) passed into private hands. Today, Bristol's staff is still drawn from an aviation background to ensure that they are steeped in the traditions of superior engineering, unimpeachable quality and a total devotion to safety.

The factory remains to this day at the Filton complex just North of Bristol with new car sales based at the world famous showroom located on Kensington High Street in London.

Brilliant Piece of Engineering

World's oldest computer recreated in Lego

It's the oldest known computer, a relic dating back 2000 years and rediscovered at the bottom of the ocean. Now designer Andrew Carol has brought it back to life - using Lego.

That's not to say this project was child's play - making the device was an engineering feat that required specialist Lego, and a lot of patience (see stop motion video above).

The idea came from journalist Adam Rutherford who had seen a Babbage Difference Engine built by Carol and got in touch. "I asked him if he'd heard of the mechanism, and if he thought it was doable in Lego," says Rutherford. "A few weeks later, he sent me some pictures of a demo version he'd knocked up. It was stunning."

The Antikythera mechanism is an astronomical computer thought to have been built in 150BC. It was rediscovered on the Antikythera shipwreck in 1900 and has since astounded researchers by its mechanical complexity. It's been recreated numerous times, but to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a working replica has been made from Lego. "We recreated a 1st century BC computer out of the best toy humankind has ever invented," Rutherford says.

The History of Westfield
In the spring of 1982 historic grand prix competitor and engineer, Chris Smith decided to design and build a replica of one of his all-time favourite race cars, the gorgeous 1956 Lotus XI Le Mans car. Such was the accuracy and beauty of the car he produced in his home garage at Westfield House, Armitage he was immediately inundated with requests from enthusiasts wanting one for themselves.

By the following Easter in 1983 the company Westfield Sportscars had been created. Further demand for the new Westfield XI replica kit meant bigger premises and staff were required and the fledgling sportscar company was under way.

After the introduction of a new car, the equally well received Westfield 7SE, a decision was taken to fade out the XI allowing the team to concentrate on production of the new kit. The company continued expanding rapidly to cope with ever growing demand, which became even stronger after the bodywork was redesigned and modernised. Westfield were now firmly established.

In 1991, Westfield expanded again moving to the impressive factory and office block in Kingswinford where we are still manufacturing today. It was here that the incredible V8-powered S Eight first caused the earth to shake. With monster power and an incredible 0-60mph time of 3.6 seconds it was Westfield's fastest machine thus far and received critical acclaim from the motoring press.

It would be hard to follow a car like that but Westfield went on to become one of the first car manufacturers to harness bike power. The small, but very powerful, high revving machines enabled incredible feats of speed, agility and offered fantastic performance at a low price.

In December 2006 ownership of Westfield Sportscars transferred to Potenza Sports Cars, a family company with a strong vision: To be the first choice sportscar provider and one of the world's most admired niche vehicle manufacturers.

September 2010 saw the landmark announcement of a Joint Venture Partnership being created in Malaysia with DRB-HICOM – Malaysia's largest vehicle manufacturer. The partnership will enable the design and development of new eco-friendly niche vehicles for the global marketplace. Westfield has sold over 12,000 cars worldwide since 1983 and currently produces over 400 cars a year for driving enthusiasts the world over.

Cambridge researcher Aubrey de Grey argues that aging is merely a disease -- and a curable one at that. Humans age in seven basic ways, he says, all of which can be averted.

Aubrey de Grey, British researcher on aging, claims he has drawn a roadmap to defeat biological aging. He provocatively proposes that the first human beings who will live to 1,000 years old have already been born.

A true maverick, Aubrey de Grey challenges the most basic assumption underlying the human condition -- that aging is inevitable. He argues instead that aging is a disease -- one that can be cured if it's approached as "an engineering problem." His plan calls for identifying all the components that cause human tissue to age, and designing remedies for each of them — forestalling disease and eventually pushing back death. He calls the approach Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS).

With his astonishingly long beard, wiry frame and penchant for bold and cutting proclamations, de Grey is a magnet for controversy. A computer scientist, self-taught biogerontologist and researcher, he has co-authored journal articles with some of the most respected scientists in the field.

But the scientific community doesn't know what to make of him. In July 2005, the MIT Technology Review challenged scientists to disprove de Grey's claims, offering a $20,000 prize (half the prize money was put up by de Grey's Methuselah Foundation) to any molecular biologist who could demonstrate that "SENS is so wrong that it is unworthy of learned debate."

The challenge remains open; the judging panel includes TEDsters Craig Venter and Nathan Myhrvold. It seems that "SENS exists in a middle ground of yet-to-be-tested ideas that some people may find intriguing but which others are free to doubt," MIT's judges wrote. And while they "don't compel the assent of many knowledgeable scientists," they're also "not demonstrably wrong."

The Baiyoke Tower II, located on 222 Rajprarop Road, in the Rajthevee district of Bangkok, is the tallest building in Thailand. It contains the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, the tallest hotel in South-east Asia and the fourth-tallest all-hotel structure in the world, with 673 guest rooms occupying floors 22 to 74.

The building is 304 m (997 ft) tall, or 328 m (1,076 ft) tall if its antenna is included. This is no mean engineering feat, considering that much of Bangkok lies on soft marine clay. It has 85 floors, with a public Observation Deck, a bar called "Roof Top Bar & Music Lounge" on the 83rd floor, and a 360-degree Revolving View Point on the 84th floor. Construction of the building took eight years and was completed in 1997, with the 24-m antenna being added two years later, in 1999.

Baiyoke Tower II is the first building in Bangkok to rise taller than 300 m. Its development followed the success of its precursor, the 44-storey Baiyoke Tower. Baiyoke Tower II is one of the first high-rise buildings in Bangkok which utilises high-strength concrete for construction. It was also, at the time completion, the world's tallest reinforced concrete structure.

The Observation Deck on the 77th floor provides a spectacular view of Bangkok and beyond the metropolis, up to the Gulf of Thailand. Maps, computerized multimedia kiosks and coin-activated telescopes help you identify what lies 250 metres down below your feet. The Observation Deck is open daily all year around from 10.30 am to 10 pm.

For the more adventurous, the Revolving View Point located on the highest floor of the building, offers a challenging open-air, 360-degree revolving view of the surrounding landscape. Opening hours are 10.30 am to 10.30 pm Mondays to Fridays and 10 am to 10.30 pm on weekends.

Wat Baan Kung is a small Buddhist chapel entombed in a banyan tree in Amphawa district, Samut Songkhram. The wat dates back to the Ayutthaya period, when King Thonburi brought his court here to regroup after the fall of the old capital, before going to Bangkok to establish a new capital.

Having won the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Award of Excellence for Health Tourism 2010, Damnoen Saduak Hospital in Ratchaburi Province is rapidly building a reputation as a centre for mixing holiday fun with a medical check-up. Damnoen Saduak Hospital is a 300-bed general hospital that is a part of Thailand's network of provincial government hospitals. Founded in 1962 by way of public donations, it is located in the town of Damnoen Saduak in Ratchaburi Province, a 100-kilometre drive from the Thai capital of Bangkok. Although one of numerous provincial hospitals, Damnoen Saduak Hospital stands out because of the quality of its health services. In 2003, it was awarded a "Certificate for Hospital Quality Assurance" by the Institute of Hospital Quality Improvement and Accreditation, a clear demonstration of the high standards of its management, services offered and academic training programs.

Damnoen Saduak Hospital has 24 fully qualified doctors and a support staff of over 500. All major medical specialties are covered, including dentistry. There is a pharmacy department staffed by trained pharmacists and a large complement of qualified and caring nurses. Led by its director, Dr Surat Lekutai, MD, the hospital is unrelenting in its quest to serve the general public at the highest possible level by constantly increasing its hospital care capabilities and the training level and knowledge of its staff.

The award-winning hospital makes having an annual physical check-up all that more interesting by offering sightseeing, a comprehensive physical examination and a variety of traditional Thai treatments designed to reinvigorate participants.

The course begins with a physical examination followed by Thai traditional massage and yoga with sightseeing to Damnoen Saduak’s famous sites such as the floating market, firefly watching at Ban Amphawa in neighbouring Samut Songkhram Province with stops at a typical rural temple and a bat cave. The physical examination is comprehensive and features all the annual tests required for certain age groups and gender. At the end of the program, the examination results are explained by a physician, who presents the laboratory documents to each participant.

In addition to traditional medical services, Damnoen Saduak Hospital has several outreach programs designed to promote good health by encouraging people to visit the facility. One of these, its Health Tour Program, combines sightseeing in Damnoen Saduak with a comprehensive physical examination and a variety of traditional Thai practices designed to reinvigorate and rejuvenate. Open to both Thais and foreign visitors, the Health Tour Program provides an economical way to see Damnoen Saduak's famous sights while having a complete physical examination and experiencing aspects of Thai culture famous for promoting good health.

Participants spend the night in twin-bedded rooms with attached bathrooms in a newly constructed wing of the hospital. There is a sofa in each room that can be made into a bed for a third person. For those desiring single-bedded rooms, they are available for a small surcharge.

The Health Check-up
The physical examination is comprehensive and includes a chest X-ray, electrocardiogram, blood pressure analysis, blood sugar analysis, blood lipid analysis, liver function analysis, renal function analysis, a dental examination and a screening for uterine cervix cancer, if appropriate. At the end of the tour, the results of the examination will be explained by a physician along with the presentation of appropriate documentation to each participant. Those desiring to have their teeth de-scaled or have minor dental work performed can have it done at attractive rates by our trained and certified dentists and staff.

Fresh Local Thai Health Food
Having researched Thai food, especially local vegetables and herbs, the Damnoen Saduak Hospital reported that these raw ingredients have high nutritional value and can cure some illness.

Historically, people had used every part of the plant such as leaves, flower, shoots and roots for cooking, and such organic ingredients have been found to be healthy. In a typical meal of the tour package, the main dishes are served with Thai rice and a variety of salads of raw fresh vegetables and herbs. Meat is just a small component in the traditional Thai meals served. Other Thai dishes, such as soups and curries also have good nutritional value. Siam Cultural Park, Ratchaburi

The Siam Cultural Park in the Bang Phae district of Ratchaburi Province, about 80 kilometres west of Bangkok, is one the most unique of the province's tourist attractions. Occupying some 16.5 acres, it brings under one roof the cultural values, traditions, and customs native to the four regions of Thailand that uniquely define the Thai way of life.

Operating since 1997, the park —with a wealth of cultural, historical and religious attractions—has a Hall of Fame that features life-size wax and fibreglass statues of famous national and foreign personalities, as well as statues of Lord Buddha and his disciplines set amidst a beautifully landscaped garden and tranquil environment.

This is an unspoiled natural park where visitors can learn art and culture and find peace and tranquility. The owner of the Siam Cultural Park, Madam Ratana Sirirornleart, says the park is a destination for educational tourism not just for schoolchildren, but for anyone who wants to understand Thai culture and history. There is a small nominal entrance charge to cover the maintenance and salary of the staff.

The Hall of Fame houses 10 wax figures of prominent personalities such as Dr Puey Ungphakorn, Ajarn Montree Tramoth, Ho Chi Minh and Mother Teresa - all presented in their customary work settings and in air-conditioned rooms. The workmanship is perfect and every figure had an eerie resemblance to the person it portrayed, the effect accentuated by the matching setting in which they operated in their lifetime.

Set in the landscaped gardens, a short distance from the Hall of Fame, are three giant statues of Buddha, each 3.5 metres tall and crafted from smoked brass representing the art form of the Chiang Saen, Sukhothai and Ayuthaya periods, regarded as the golden age of Thai history. To the casual eye they all appear the same, but if you observe them closely there is no mistaking they represent a smiling Buddha, symbolising the sign of the times.

Next, is a light and sound presentation depicting the story of Vessantara, the reincarnation of Buddha in his previous life, when he was confronted by a malicious Jujaka, who begged him for possession of his children. This particular depiction was selected because it teaches one to be self-content and rid ourself of all worldly attachments.

Another section of the park was dedicated to prominent former monks from four regions of the country, their images cast in fibreglass and set in distinctive kuti or remote abodes connected by a ladder, all replicated from their original kuti. A number of visitors were seen prostrating before the images as a show of respect. Every kuti was connected by a PA system briefing visitors about its occupant and his life's work. And there was a hall featuring life-size wax statues of five monks regarded as exponents of the highest order of dhamma and Buddhism.

From there we moved on to the lifestyle and houses section, the final part of our park tour. The distinctive architectural styles of the houses blend harmoniously with the social and cultural ambience of the region they represent. The houses have wax models of the occupants, each telling the way of life of the people.

The house from the central region is much admired for its sheer style and architecture, influenced in part by religion and the people's belief in the supernatural. It is a simple wooden house with no partitions or bedrooms. No nails or metal were used in its construction, even at the joints, which makes it all the more unique.

Thus, the Siam Cultural Park is a monument to everything Thai and their national identity.

The Thai Loy Krathong Festival

Of all Thai festivities, none is so enchanting as Loy Krathong. It is celebrated annually throughout Thailand on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls on the last full moon in November, just after the end of the rainy season, when the sky is clear and the water level in the river is high.

"Loy" means "to float" and a "krathong" is a decorative object traditionally made from a section of banana stem as the base. It is a tiny vessel that carries people's aspirations and floats away their sorrows. Usually quite small, about 20 cm in diameter, they are traditionally decorated with banana leaves and flowers. The banana leaves are cut into pieces, folded and pinned around the circular base, onto which are laid flowers (especially orchids), and into which are stuck a candle and three joss sticks. A low denomination coin is sometimes included as an offering to the river spirits.

Modern krathongs are also made of bread. There was a time, in recent years, when krathongs were made of Styrofoam, but the use of this synthetic material is now strongly discouraged by environmentalists and the authorities. A bread krathong will disintegrate in a few days and be eaten by fish and other river animals. The traditional banana stem krathongs are also biodegradable, but Styrofoam krathongs are frowned on, since they are polluting.

Under the full moon, people from all walks of life converge any convenient stretch of running water—canals, rivers and the sea—to launch their krathongs. It is a tranquil moment as the placid devotees, bathed in warm golden candlelight, go to the water's edge, light the candle and incense, and raise the krathong slightly above their heads in supplication and to make their wish. Then comes the release. Kneeling and leaning forward, they place the krathong gently on the water, and give it a little push to help it on its way. Traditionally, the wish-maker watches until the candle flame has floated out of sight or is lost amongst all the others.

To this day, similar customs exist in neighbouring Burma, Laos and Cambodia, and it seems likely that the festival us derived from a Hindu cultural tradition in honour of the god Vishnu. Others believe the festival to originate in an ancient practice of paying respects to the water spirits. Whatever its origins, the custom gained a particular beauty and popularity in the hands of the Thais, who have a much-loved legend about its origins.

Many Thais say it originated in Sukhothai, the first true Thai kingdom, established in 1238 AD in the north of present-day Thailand. Nang Noppamas was a royal consort of the 14th century Sukothai king Loethai and she was the first to float a decorated raft. She was renown for her beauty and skill in devising ways to please the monarch. One evening, as legend has it, as the royal entourage was gliding down the river to watch the full moon celebrations on the banks, she presented her latest novelty: a little boat in the shape of a lots blossom, made of deftly folded banana leaves, with incense sticks and a candle burning in the centre. From then on, the ladies of the court vied to see who could produce the most elaborate krathong, going far beyond the simple banana-leaf creation of Nang Noppamas. The krathong, it is said, soon ceased to be a purely aristocratic amusement and became widespread among the people.

The act of floating away the krathong is symbolic of letting go of all one's grudges, anger and defilements, so that one can start life afresh on a clean footing. People will also cut their fingernails and hair and add them to the krathong as a symbol of letting go of the bad parts of oneself. Many Thais believe that floating a krathong will bring good luck, and they do it to honour and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha.

Today, having lesser religious significance, the Loy Krathong festival is simply a time to have fun. Krathong competitions exist on a scale unimaginable in previous times and the festivities are exuberantly inventive, full of merriment and madness, including fireworks displays and musical mayhem. Governmental departments, corporations and other organizations usually sponsor big decorated rice barges on the river. There are also local and officially organised competitions, where the beauty and craftsmanship of these highly decorated rices barges are judged.

In addition, there are also beauty contests during the celebration of the festival in public parks, usually along the riverbanks. Not unexpectedly, the beauty contests that accompany the Loy Krathong festival are known as Noppamas Queen Contests, a fitting tribute to the festival’s Thai origins.
