Outback driver caught in reverse

A man pulled over for driving slowly in the Australian outback has been charged with reckless driving - because police found him driving in reverse.

The man was stopped for driving at a little over 56 km/h (35 mph) on a highway near the outback town of Kalgoorlie.

But quick police work soon established that the car was in fact heading backwards - all the way to Perth, some 550 km (340 miles) across the desert.

The driver, 22, told police he chose to drive in reverse when his gears failed.

Police were left baffled as to why unnamed driver chose not to call a mechanic from Kalgoorlie, the Western Australia gold mining town where his gearbox "cooked".

Instead they listened as he explained how he set off in reverse gear along the Great Eastern Highway in his 1988 Ford.

He was forced to slow down from his top speed of 80 km/h because he found himself swerving wildly across the road, police said.

He had already travelled 20 km before he was stopped.

Police breathalysed the man, who was found not to be under the influence of alcohol.

SHOCKED traffic police have caught a man who was attempting to drive 600 km from Kalgoorlie to Perth - in reverse.

Police from the traffic-enforcement group could not believe their eyes yesterday when they saw an early-model Ford LTD coming over a hill near Coolgardie doing 66 km/h - in reverse.

The driver told police he had transmission problems and could not use the forward gears.

He said he had been travelling at up to 80 km/h, but had to slow to about 65 km/h because he was swerving too much.

The driver had covered 20 km in reverse along Great Eastern Highway before being stopped.

He was breath tested and returned a negative reading.

The 22-year-old was charged with reckless driving and other traffic offences. He will appear in Coolgardie Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Roger D. Kornberg

Won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2006

Roger David Kornberg (born 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American scientist and professor of structural biology at Stanford University.

Kornberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2006 "for his studies of the molecular basis of eukaryotic transcription" which explains the process by which DNA is converted into RNA. His father, Arthur Kornberg, who was also a professor at Stanford University, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1959.

Biography
Roger was the first of three children born to Arthur Kornberg and his wife, Sylvy, who was also a biochemist working with Arthur.

Kornberg earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1967 and his PhD from Stanford in 1972, before doing post-doctoral research at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, United Kingdom. He joined Harvard Medical School in 1976 as an assistant professor in the department of biological chemistry. Kornberg returned to Stanford in 1978 as a professor in the structural biology department. He served as department chair from 1984 until 1992. He serves as the Mrs. George A. Winzer Professor in Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Kornberg is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Nobel Prize
In order for a body to make use of the information stored in the genes, a copy must first be made and transferred to the outer parts of the cells. There it is used as an instruction for protein production ? it is the proteins that in their turn actually construct the organism and its function. The copying process is called transcription.

Roger Kornberg was the first to create an actual picture of how transcription works at a molecular level in the important group of organisms called eukaryotes (organisms whose cells have a well-defined nucleus). Mammals like ourselves are included in this group, as is ordinary yeast.

Roger Kornberg's younger brother, Thomas Bill Kornberg, discovered DNA polymerase II and III in 1970 and is now a biochemist at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1959, their father Arthur Kornberg received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for studies of how genetic information is transferred from one DNA molecule to another. The Kornbergs are the sixth father-son team to win Nobel Prizes.

How to Read a Novel:
A User's Guide (Hardcover)

If the members of the 2006 Man Booker panel need any help wading through the selected titles, they need look no further than John Sutherland, chairman of last year's committee.

Under his guidance, the UK's most prestigious literary prize was controversially awarded to The Sea, by Irish author John Banville.

How the judges came to that decision forms part of his latest work How to Read a Novel, an instructional tome offering consumers tips on how to gain the most from the wealth of published fiction now on offer.

"There is so much choice, all of it tempting and much of it good,"
Sutherland says.

"What I wanted to do, as much for myself as anyone else, was find strategies to get through this extraordinary thicket."

'Thundering cattle'
To maximise the enjoyment of reading fiction, Mr Sutherland argues, the reader must develop individual criteria based on personal preferences.

These can be hard to establish when every bookshop's shelves come groaning with instructions, exhortations and endorsements.

"I get slightly worried when everyone buys The Da Vinci Code," he says. "It's like a herd of thundering cattle, all heading in the same direction.

"If there is a message in the book, it's choose for yourself - find out who you are and what fiction works for you."

Prizes like the Man Booker can prove a valuable pointer for readers, Mr Sutherland argues.

"Some say the Booker is only there to stimulate book sales, but I don't believe that," he says.

"What will happen is that people will look at the novels that are nominated and say, 'Do I agree?'

'Interesting places'
"At their best, that is what prizes do - they give people signposts."

"People don't necessarily have to follow them. But if they do, they can get to interesting places," he adds.

With its playful references to Jacqueline Susann, Jeffrey Archer and Star Trek, earnest is not a word that readily applies to Sutherland's latest work.

But while the book displays an admirable lightness of touch - not least by having a glowing rave from its own author emblazoned on its jacket - the writer has a serious point to convey.

"Novels can enlarge your life," he says. "The more you read, the more you discover about yourself.

"You can't eat or breathe them, and they won't solve our problems. But they do define our problems in a way that makes it easier for us to solve them ourselves."

Andrew Fire

Andrew Z. Fire (born 1959), 2006 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine winner with Craig C. Mello of the for the discovery of RNA interference (RNAi). He is professor of pathology and of genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

The Nobel citation, issued by Sweden's Karolinska Institute, said: "This year's Nobel Laureates have discovered a fundamental mechanism for controlling the flow of genetic information."

In 1998, Dr Mello and Dr Fire with their colleagues (SiQun Xu, Mary Montgomery, Stephen Kostas, Sam Driver) published a paper* in the journal Nature detailing how tiny snippets of RNA dupe the cell into destroying the gene's messenger RNA (mRNA) before it can produce a protein - effectively shutting specific genes down.

This silencing process called RNA interference, or RNAi, has become a widespread research tool and therapeutic lead. Since its initial description, RNAi has been recognized as an underlying process in animals, plants and lower organisms.

Previously, RNA had been thought to have very little role in regulating genes - in fact some thought it nothing more than a by-product.

Dr Mello and Dr Fire's work, which was conducted the research while at the Carnegie Institution, had shown that in fact it plays a key role in gene regulation. The fact that their work had been recognised by the Nobel committee just eight years after it was published indicated just how important it had been. It is very unusual for a piece of work to completely revolutionise the whole way we think about biological processes and regulation, but this has opened up a whole new field in biology.

This ability to dramatically reduce an individual protein inside of cells makes RNAi a valuable research tool. What was once a laborious process is now as easy as sneaking an RNA molecule into the cell with a sequence that matches the RNA a researcher wants destroyed. That ability to one-by-one shut down the production of a given protein in a cell opens up previously impossible areas of research.

Say, for example, a researcher wants to know all the genes involved in a particular cellular event. The researcher can use an RNAi library to individually disrupt each gene from making its protein, then look for the ones that interfere with the event in question.

Another area where scientists have high hopes for RNAi is in developing new RNA-based treatements for disease including a possible therapeutic role for RNAi in gene therapy.

Biography
Fire was born at Stanford Hospital and raised in Sunnyvale, Calif. He received bachelor's in mathematics in 1978 from UC-Berkeley. At the age of 19 he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he earned his PhD in biology in 1983.

Fire was later a Helen Hay Whitney Postdoctoral Fellow in Cambridge, England, where he worked at an MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology group headed by Nobel laureate Sydney Brenner. Between 1986 and 2003, Fire was a staff member of the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Department of Embryology in Baltimore.

The initial work on double stranded RNA as a trigger of gene silencing was published while Fire and his group were at the Carnegie Labs. Fire was an adjunct professor in the Department of Biology at Johns Hopkins University starting in 1989 and joined the Stanford faculty in 2003. Throughout his career, all of the major work in Fire's lab has been supported by research grants from the US National Institutes of Health.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy of Sciences. He also serves on the Board of Scientific Counselors and the National Center for Biotechnology, National Institutes of Health.

Driza faces a substantial prison term

In London, it was revealed that 60-year-old immigration tribunal judge Mohammed Ilyias Khan had an affair with his 37-year-old Brazilian cleaner Roselane Driza from South Norwood, south London.

Justice Ilyias Khan said he was a fool to embark on an affair with his Brazilian cleaner as he had become "a complete and total puppy to her." He told the Old Bailey on Thursday he had started a relationship with Ms Driza after she stopped being his cleaner.

The court was told he found it hard to get Ms Driza to leave and that she continued to live at his flat rent-free, the court heard. She was still at Ilyias Khan's flat when she was arrested on 25 October 2005.

Asked by Frances Oldham QC, defending, why he was still sleeping with her in 2005, Ilyias Khan said it was because he did not want her to pursue her threats. Ms Driza had taken two videos of him having sex with other women and threatened to send them to his "boss", Lord Falconer, the court heard.

Mrs Oldham said: "Your motive of being friendly with the defendant was entirely for your own selfish reasons.

"You were using her as a cheap housekeeper with whom you were able to enjoy sex."

Pope Benedict XVI has expressed "deep respect" for Islam

Text of Pope's speech

The following is the text of Pope Benedict XVI's speech to Muslim envoys, in which the pontiff tried to defuse tensions between the Catholic Church and Islam over comments he made earlier this month in southern Germany.

"I am pleased to welcome you to this gathering that I wanted to arrange in order to strengthen the bonds of friendship and solidarity between the Holy See and Muslim communities throughout the world.

I thank Cardinal Poupard, President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue, for the words that he has just addressed to me, and I thank all of you for responding to my invitation.

The circumstances which have given rise to our gathering are well known. I have already had occasion to dwell upon them in the course of the past week.

In this particular context, I should like to reiterate today all the esteem and the profound respect that I have for Muslim believers, calling to mind the words of the Second Vatican Council which for the Catholic Church are the Magna Carta of Muslim-Christian dialogue:

"The Church looks upon Muslims with respect. They worship the one God living and subsistent, merciful and almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to humanity and to whose decrees, even the hidden ones, they seek to submit themselves whole-heartedly, just as Abraham, to whom the Islamic faith readily relates itself, submitted to God" (Declaration Nostra Aetate, 3).

Placing myself firmly within this perspective, I have had occasion, since the very beginning of my pontificate, to express my wish to continue establishing bridges of friendship with the adherents of all religions, showing particular appreciation for the growth of dialogue between Muslims and Christians (cf. Address to the Delegates of Other Churches and Ecclesial Communities and of Other Religious Traditions, 25 April 2005).

As I underlined at Cologne last year, "Inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue between Christians and Muslims cannot be reduced to an optional extra.

"It is, in fact, a vital necessity, on which in large measure our future depends" (Meeting with Representatives of Some Muslim Communities, Cologne, 20 August 2005).

In a world marked by relativism and too often excluding the transcendence and universality of reason, we are in great need of an authentic dialogue between religions and between cultures, capable of assisting us, in a spirit of fruitful co-operation, to overcome all the tensions together.

Continuing, then, the work undertaken by my predecessor, Pope John Paul II, I sincerely pray that the relations of trust which have developed between Christians and Muslims over several years, will not only continue, but will develop further in a spirit of sincere and respectful dialogue, based on ever more authentic reciprocal knowledge which, with joy, recognises the religious values that we have in common and, with loyalty, respects the differences.

Inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue is a necessity for building together this world of peace and fraternity ardently desired by all people of good will.

In this area, our contemporaries expect from us an eloquent witness to show all people the value of the religious dimension of life.

Likewise, faithful to the teachings of their own religious traditions, Christians and Muslims must learn to work together, as indeed they already do in many common undertakings, in order to guard against all forms of intolerance and to oppose all manifestations of violence; as for us, religious authorities and political leaders, we must guide and encourage them in this direction.

Indeed, "although considerable dissensions and enmities between Christians and Muslims may have arisen in the course of the centuries, the Council urges all parties that, forgetting past things, they train themselves towards sincere mutual understanding and together maintain and promote social justice and moral values as well as peace and freedom for all people" (Declaration, Nostra Aetate, 3).

The lessons of the past must therefore help us to seek paths of reconciliation, in order to live with respect for the identity and freedom of each individual, with a view to fruitful co-operation in the service of all humanity.

As Pope John Paul II said in his memorable speech to young people at Casablanca in Morocco: "Respect and dialogue require reciprocity in all spheres, especially in that which concerns basic freedoms, more particularly religious freedom. They favour peace and agreement between peoples" (no. 5).

Dear friends, I am profoundly convinced that in the current world situation it is imperative that Christians and Muslims engage with one another in order to address the numerous challenges that present themselves to humanity, especially those concerning the defence and promotion of the dignity of the human person and of the rights ensuing from that dignity.

When threats mount up against people and against peace, by recognising the central character of the human person and by working with perseverance to see that human life is always respected, Christians and Muslims manifest their obedience to the Creator, who wishes all people to live in the dignity that he has bestowed upon them.

Dear friends, I pray with my whole heart that the merciful God will guide our steps along the paths of an ever more authentic mutual understanding.

At this time when for Muslims the spiritual journey of the month of Ramadan is beginning, I address to all of them my cordial good wishes, praying that the Almighty may grant them serene and peaceful lives. May the God of peace fill you with the abundance of his blessings, together with the communities that you represent."

Indonesian ambassador Bambang Prayitno said he was surprised that there was no direct dialogue at the meeting. In the space of just half an hour, the pontiff made a brief speech to envoys before greeting them individually, but there was no general discussion.

He pointed out that the Pope had not referred directly to the speech which sparked the controversy. Muslim leaders had been demanding an unequivocal apology from the Pope for his words.

"We had hoped that there would have been a dialogue, but that was not the case," Bambang Prayitno said.

"There was no dialogue between the Pope and the guests... In general, we were actually a bit surprised that the meeting was a short one and [ended] just like that."

The Perelman Enigma

Photos of the reclusive genius are rare

Without doubt a mathematical genius, Grigori Yakovlevich Perelman aka Grisha Perelman is also the ultimate unsung anti-hero.

In 1981, Dr Richard Hamilton of Columbia devised a method, known as the Ricci flow, to investigate the shapes of spaces. Dr Shing-Tung Yau of Harvard was enthusiastic that this method might finally crack the Poincaré conjecture. He began working with Dr Hamilton and urging others to work on it, with little success.

Then, in 2003, a Russian mathematician, Grigori Perelman, sketched a way to jump a roadblock that had stymied Dr Hamilton and to prove the hallowed theorem as well as a more general one proposed by the Cornell mathematician William Thurston. Dr Perelman promptly disappeared, leaving his colleagues to connect the dots.

Having solved the famous Poincaré conjecture, posed in 1904 and regarded as one of the most important and difficult open problems in mathematics, Perelman has refused to accept one of the discipline's top awards, the prestigious Fields Medal, which was awarded to him on August 22, 2006. A week later a drawing in The New Yorker showed Dr Shing-Tung Yau trying to grab the Fields Medal from the neck of Dr Perelman.

Apparently, Perelman is currently jobless, living with his mother in St Petersburg, and subsisting on her modest pension. His friends are said to have stated that he currently finds mathematics a painful topic to discuss; some even say that he has abandoned mathematics entirely.

He has stated that he is disappointed with mathematics' ethical standards, in particular of Fields medalist Shing-Tung Yau's effort to downplay his role in the proof and up-play the work of Huai-Dong Cao of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and Xi-Ping Zhu of Sun Yat-sen University in China.

In a speech in June 2006 during the string theory conference, Dr Yau said, ?In Perelman?s work, many key ideas of the proofs are sketched or outlined, but complete details of the proofs are often missing,? adding that the Cao-Zhu paper had filled some of these in with new arguments.

This annoyed many mathematicians, who felt that Dr Yau had slighted Dr Perelman. Other teams who were finishing their own connect-the-dots proofs said they had found no gaps in Dr Perelman?s work. ?There was no mystery they suddenly resolved,? said John Morgan of Columbia, who was working with Gang Tian of Princeton on a proof.

On his Web site, doctoryau.com, Dr Yau has posted a 12-page letter showing what he and his lawyer say are errors in the New Yorker article. The New Yorker has said it stands by its reporting.

Perelman has said that "I can't say I'm outraged. Other people do worse. Of course, there are many mathematicians who are more or less honest. But almost all of them are conformists. They are more or less honest, but they tolerate those who are not honest. It is not people who break ethical standards who are regarded as aliens. It is people like me who are isolated."

This led him to quit professional mathematics. He has said that "As long as I was not conspicuous, I had a choice. Either to make some ugly thing" (a fuss about the mathematics community's lack of integrity) "or, if I didn't do this kind of thing, to be treated as a pet. Now, when I become a very conspicuous person, I cannot stay a pet and say nothing. That is why I had to quit."

Professor Marcus du Sautoy of Oxford University has said that "He has sort of alienated himself from the maths community. He has become disillusioned with mathematics, which is quite sad. He's not interested in money. The big prize for him is proving his theorem."

In a new twist, a flaw has been discovered in the Cao-Zhu paper. One of the arguments that the authors used to fill in Dr Perelman?s proof is identical to one posted on the Internet in June 2003 by Bruce Kleiner, of Yale, and John Lott, of the University of Michigan, who had been trying to explicate Dr Perelman?s work.

In an erratum to run in The Asian Journal of Mathematics, Dr Cao and Dr Zhu acknowledge the mistake, saying they had forgotten that they studied and incorporated that material into their notes three years ago.

In an e-mail message, Dr Yau said the incident was ?unfortunate? but reaffirmed his decision to expedite the paper?s publication. ?Even after the correction, the paper provides many important new details and clarifications of Hamilton and Perelman?s proof of the Poincaré and Thurston conjectures.?

Dearest members of the Azlan Adnan, CTM, MA Fan Club,

Greetings from District 51 Toastmasters, which covers Toastmasters clubs in Brunei, Indonesia & Malaysia.

Toastmasters International is a non-profit organisation that provides training within a club meeting where members learn the art of public speaking, presentation skills, and overcome their fear of speaking before an audience as well as providing us the leadership skills that we needed in our daily working lives.

I am in the midst of forming a Toastmasters Club for all the people living in Kota Warisan, Dengkil, Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi and Nilai among others within this coming month of September 2006. The venue will be most likely in Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi.

In a typical Toastmasters meeting, members learn to speak off the cuff, giving speeches as well as receiving feedback and evaluations. In a club meeting, there is no right and wrong, but it is the members, the more experience members that will guide you to the best they could. We learn best in a fun environment where every member's ultimate goal is to improve themselves.

We need around 20-35 members to jump-start the formation of this club with minimum investment in monetary terms but great benefit for self-development.

5) Zero-Tolerance Policy on Smoking
We have a zero-tolerance policy on smoking. Cancer sticks are not sold at the Pejabat Pos Mini Kota Warisan. Tobacco addicts are kindly requested get your daily nicotine fix elsewhere.

We forbid the smoking of tobacco (cigarettes, pipes, cigars, cigarellos or whatever else you wish to call those cancer-sticks) on our premises. If you wish to poison your wife and children in the comfort of your own home, that is your business.

Adult smokers are kindly requested to extinguish their cigarettes before entering the premises. And no, we do NOT enjoy picking up your cigarette butts from our floor or five-foot way, so please do that yourself or set a good example to your children by using the wastebasket provided.

Smokers under 18 or in school uniform will be detained and handed over to the police. (Your mother can bail you out after you have spent a night in the Police lock-up in your underwear.)

Get your Mobile 03- number now!

CDMA phone
Homeline Wireless Service is a wireless service offered by TM, where customers can enjoy voice, fax and internet/data applications with a better quality of service (CDMA is the underlying technology on which 3G was built). It provides an alternative service to normal Homeline/Businessline telephony.

Call Charges
Call Charges are as per the normal PSTN tariff structure.

TM offers an option to select your preferred type of Mobile Wireless phone set (choice of 3 models in the photo above). Only the Huawei C506 supports fax and internet/data applications. The Huawei C2205 and Motorola W150i both only support voice and SMS.

No rental is charged for the Mobile Wireless phone set and customers are required to purchase the mobile phone set from TMpoint.

If you live in Kota Warisan or Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, your CDMA phone number with start with 03-8731 XXXX and not 03-8706 XXXX. This is because Salak Tinggi is a border town (with 06-) and you may get inadvertant access through the Nilai transmitter (for which you will be charged 06- outstation rates). To resolve this issue, you wll be given a Semenyih or Dengkil number starting with 03-8731 XXXX. This will force your phone to use the Dengkil transmitter, and not the Nilai transmitter, thus giving you a lower rate when making calls to 03- numbers.

Undocumented Benefits
Get two CDMA phones registered in the same exchange, i.e. 03-8731 XXXX, and give one handset to a person living outstation, say studying at UMS or Unimas. You can then make calls to each other and be charged local call rates!

Fine Print
1) You can't receive sms from or send sms to 012, 014, 016 and 017 numbers for the time being as DiGi and Maxis haven't implemented support for CDMA, even though they have already signed MOUs with TM (can only begrudgingly give token support to competitor, ma!). Word has it that Maxis will implement CDMA support in September 2006 ~ Watch this space!
2) You have to pay RM10 stamp duty upfront.
3) You have to sign up for a one-year contract, minimum.
4) You no longer can get a Nokia CDMA phone. This is because their contract wasn't renewed as TM wants Nokia to focus on Celcom. Tough shit, I know.

Anyway, if you have a look at the CDMA call rates, you will realise CDMA will kill all existing mobile phone service providers with their really, really cheap rates (same as your existing landline, ma!).
