New solar panel unveiled

Solar panels help reduce carbon emissions

A Scottish firm has launched what it describes as a new type of solar panel aimed at home owners.

Solar Power Scotland, which is based in Montrose, said the system, ~ which contains tubes made on the same principle as a vacuum flask - can be connected to an ordinary water tank, could cut water heating costs by more than two thirds.

The firm's finance director Mary Haddick said its system had been developed "to meet increasing demand from the public to reduce ever-spiralling fuel bills and to do something proactive in helping reduce damaging carbon emissions. The panels are a real alternative energy option for the 21st Century."

Thermal Solar Evacuated Tube Collectors

Reduce your hot water heating costs by up to 70% by installing an Evacuated Tube Thermal Solar Collector on your roof.

Traditional flat plate solar collectors produce copious amounts of hot water in sunny conditions but very little in dull, overcast and rainy weather. With our new evacuated tube solar technology we can produce very useful amounts of hot water in every season of the year.

The technology is based on the same principle as the vacuum flask, the heat being trapped by the vacuum and once it has been absorbed, gives very much less heat loss.

The tubes are coated with an extremely thin layer of a special coating which enhances the absorption of the sunlight with a huge 93% of sunlight being transformed into heat. Even in hazy sunshine these evacuated tube solar collectors can achieve around 75% total efficiency compared to only 5% for the conventional flat plate. So now we can have good performance during spring and autumn and also useful amounts of hot water during winter.
