  • Transit Service Centre Budget Hotel to open on June 4
A Budget Hotel is opening in Kota Warisan next to the Pos Mini Kota Warisan from June 4, 2006. The address is:

    Transit Service Centre Budget Hotel
    8 Jalan Airport City 2
    Airport City Business Centre
    Kota Warisan
    43900 SEPANG
    Malaysia

The rates have not been announced yet but as its a budget hotel, the room rate should be very affordable.

Food Stall Rental Available at Pos Mini Kota Warisan
With the opening of the budget hotel, I am renting out the space in front of the Pos Mini Kota Warisan to operators of food and drink stalls. So far a char kuey tiau seller and a Ramli burger stall operator have expressed interest but have not confirmed their participation. There is also a need for someone to operate a drinks stall selling tea, coffee and cold canned drinks. I have installed two outdoor electrical mains power points and two taps. A sink will be installed under one of the taps in the coming weeks. The rental is RM150/month, payable in advance. There is no deposit required. Anyone interested can contact me at 019-28-AZLAN

Pos Mini Kota Warisan to go online from June 12
This means Kota Warisan residents will be able to pay their utility bills at the Pos Mini Kota Warisan and no longer have to travel all the way to Salak Tinggi or Dengkil.

Due to the renovations going on at the budget hotel next door and on our upper floors, there is a lot of dust and noise. I have therefore taken the opportunity to send my staff for training at Pos Malaysia. This means we may operate irregular opening hours until mid-June. Our plan is to be online from June 12 but that all depends on TM Net Sdn Bhd as they still can't seem to get Streamyx up and running at the Pos Mini Kota Warisan, or anywhere else at the Airport City Business Centre. I have written to Zainab Hashim, their GM of Marketing asking for her assistance in resolving this issue. If I do not get any results from her, I'll escalate the matter to their CEO, Michael Chin Tak or even the TM Berhad chairman, Tan Sri Dato' Ir. Muhammad Radzi.

Community Notice Boards in Villa Impian & Pos Mini Kota Warisan
As a public service, Community Notice Boards have been put up at the bottom of two staircases in Villa Impian above the letterboxes as the developers and property management have just cleaned the notices stuck onto the doors and walls. There is no charge for putting up notices on these Community Notice Boards. There are also several Community Notice Boards at the Pos Mini Kota Warisan.

    Number One Keling

Question: Ever wondered why kelings are held in such contempt and derision?
Answer: This is typical of the way they behave in public.

Samy Vellu: Who's more barbaric, more stupid?

Doesn't machan look so handsome in his new toupé?

SHAH ALAM, 23 May 2006: Who is more barbaric? This is the question Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu posed to delegates at the party's Selangor convention here yesterday.

Incensed by Makkal Osai, which labelled MIC supporters as barbarians for burning copies of the daily on Saturday in protest against its reporting, Samy Vellu said the reporter who wrote the story was more barbaric.

"Only a bigger barbarian recognises the smaller barbarians," he said.

The controversy stemmed from reports in Makkal Osai and Malaysia Nanban which quoted Samy Vellu at the Johor party convention as saying that former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had not done anything for the Indian community.

Samy Vellu said those who wrote that story had not understood what he had said and it was a move to undermine him. The Works Minister said anybody who said Dr Mahathir had not done anything for Indians was stupid, and those who listened to them were more stupid.

On his promise to provide proof that his estranged deputy Datuk S. Subramaniam had a stake in the two dailies, Samy Vellu said he would release them when the time was right.

Earlier as he arrived to open the convention, Samy Vellu got into a heated argument at the lobby with a man.

The man, unhappy over not being picked as a delegate, hurled obscenities against Samy Vellu and left with several others after being advised by delegates.

    Typical Keling Behaviour

Question: Ever wondered why kelings are held in such contempt and derision?
Answer: This is typical of the way they behave in public.

Kelings turn graft trial into slanging match

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 May 2006: A keling lawyer and a keling politician shouting at each other in open court; the keling politician's supporters joining in the slanging match; the presiding judge storming out.

It had all the ingredients of a TV drama, but it was not. It happened yesterday at the Ampang court.

Policemen had to calm the two kelings, with Sessions Court judge Noradidah Ahmad returning to the bench an hour later.

The graft trial of former Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) enforcement director Captain (Rtd) Abdul Kudus Ahmad started well enough, but the problem began when his keling counsel M. Manoharan told the court he would be making an application to cite one of his keling witnesses (Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk M. Kayveas) for contempt.

"Abdul Kudus' case began in 2003, and is still ongoing. Nobody, be it a deputy minister or a minister, should comment on the case, as it would be sub judice," Manoharan said.

"However, on Jan 21, it was reported in The Malay Mail that a deputy minister commented on my client's case, which has now been turned into a trial by the media."

At this juncture, Kayveas, who was seated in the public gallery, stood up and began trading barbs with Manoharan, with each calling the other a liar.

Kayveas: "Are you talking about me?"

Manoharan: "You're not allowed to talk from the public gallery. As a witness, you should not be in the courtroom during proceedings."

Manoharan, who was seated at the bar, turned around and both pointed fingers at each other.

Kayveas: "I am a defence witness, not a prosecution witness. You called me here today, so I have the right to be in court. I am waiting for you to call me. Unless, you don't want me here... I am leaving."

Manoharan: "You are not allowed to talk."

Manoharan's assistant R. Kengatharan then stood up to say: "Get out, you deputy minister, get out of the court room."

The judge, who looked agitated, then walked off in a huff.

Kayveas and Manoharan, however, continued trading insults.

Kayveas: "You called me here as your witness, I have the right to be in court."

Manoharan: "You are a hostile witness. Do not think you are in Parliament."

Kayveas: "Don't make me wait here. I have a lot of things to do in Parliament."

Court police officers finally got them to calm down.

Proceedings resumed almost an hour later when Noradidah returned to the bench to enquire if "things had cooled down".

Manoharan: "They have. But his (Kayveas) behaviour just now was unethical. I want to make an application against my witness. He cannot simply stand up as he pleases in court. He is here to assist the court, he is not a court officer. This is not a fair trial. He comes here with his large entourage and threatens me. He was a lawyer, so he should know this is unacceptable. He was disrespectful and threatened me."

Noradidah told Kayveas to give his side of the story.

Kayveas: "I am a defence witness and was called here today but he told me to get out. I wanted to know if he needed me here. There were no threats. Maybe the air-con in the courtroom is loud, which resulted in the raised voices. I did not threaten him. He is a liar."

Manoharan then interjected, asking the judge to order Kayveas to shut up, but the deputy minister did not let up, accusing Manoharan of "creating an issue".

Manoharan: "He is a Number One liar. He kept on threatening us. He is seeking publicity. He has no right to speak. Kayveas should be punished. We will be lodging a police report against him."

Noradidah: "And you still want him as your witness?"

Manoharan: "He is a hostile witness, a ruthless man. We want the court to caution him. He was subpoenaed, so he must attend proceedings."

Earlier, before the drama began, Manoharan had made two applications to the court ~ for a retrial and to cite Kayveas for contempt based on The Malay Mail report.

    Message from Allah 'in tomato'

Two messages appeared when the tomato was cut open

Hundreds of Muslims flocked to a small terraced house in West Yorkshire in September 1999 to see a tomato which they believe carries a divine message from Allah.

Housewife Shabana Hussain, 27, found the Islamic scripture while she was preparing a meal for her family.

She chopped a tomato in half, and "bismillah" was written in Arabic in the veins. The other half of the vegetable said "la illaha illala," or "There is no God but Allah."

"I was shocked and surprised," she said. "Now word has got out about the tomato and hundreds of people have called in to see it."

Mrs Hussain and her husband Imdad, who have four young children, are now expecting more visitors to their home in the Girlington district.

"It's very clear," said Mrs Hussain. "Everyone has been able to make the message out."

Mr Hussain was "delighted" with the find. He said the imam from his local mosque confirmed the scriptures were written in the tomato, and that word of it had spread very quickly.

"We have been inundated with people," he said. "We made the discovery on Tuesday, and still had people coming to see it on Thursday at midnight."

'Explaining its religious importance, Mr Hussain said: "As Muslims we believe that God, or Allah, created everything, and we know that God can do anything. This is a sign of his strength and guidance."

When asked if he would consider eating the tomato, he said: "Of course not. Although there would be no harm in eating it.

"It has been suggested that it would be good for someone who was ill, to eat something that had been blessed by God. That would be a good thing to do with it."

He said he wanted to be able to keep the tomato for as long as possible, but had ruled out putting it in the freezer because that would "turn it to water".

"At the moment, we are keeping it in the fridge, and I have rung Leeds University food sciences department to see if there is any way of preserving it," he said.

    Oscar 'has Allah marking'

A customer has offered £10 for the fish

A pet shop owner has found the markings on one of his tropical fish appear to spell the word "Allah" in Arabic. The fish is also believed to have the word "Mohammed" in its markings on its other side.

An Asian customer spotted the markings on the Astronotus ocellatus at Walker Aquatics in Waterfoot, Rawtenstall, Lancashire, and offered to buy it for £10.

The customer bought the most expensive tank in the shop to house the fish, at a cost of £700.

Shop owner Tony Walker said he would honour the buyer's £10 offer but said he expected more interest in the fish.

The South American Astronotus ocellatus is also known as an oscar fish. It typically grows to about 30-40 cm long, weighing about 1.5 kg.

    Wa anta khair al-raziqin

The tuna fish with what looks like Arabic writing on its side

A fish with markings that resembled a Quranic text has been handed to the Kenyan Fisheries Department in Mombasa. The fish is being studied to find out if the Arabic inscription "You are the best provider" was natural or a hoax.

Sceptics say the writing was the work of someone who caught the fish and then threw it back into the sea.

But others say this would be impossible, and local imams are said to have been talking in the mosques about the fish.

The text is close to the Quranic verse: "Wa anta khair al-raziqin"

After being asked by Muslim leaders in Kenya, officials from Kenya's National Museum based at Fort Jesus in Mombasa had offered to take custody of the fish and preserve it for the country's heritage.

The mysterious 2.5-kg tuna was caught by fisherman Said Ali at the end of last week at Vanga, a small fishing port on the Kenyan coast, 50 km south of Mombasa.

    Orange Award Shortlist

The Orange Award for New Writers, an off-shoot of the Orange Prize for Fiction, can be presented to any first work of fiction published in the UK and written in English by a female author.

"It is a fantastically strong year and the three we have chosen are all award-winning books on any level, never mind the fact that they happen to be by first-timers," said author Louise Doughty, who chairs the judging panel.

    'Wholeheartedly recommended'
She added the nominees were "two exceptional novels and one wonderful collection of short stories" and said the judges "wholeheartedly recommend them all". This year's winner will be announced in London on 6 June.

In 2005, Diana Evans received the award in its inaugural year for her debut novel, 26a: A Novel.

The 2006 nominees for the Orange Award for New Writers are:

Naomi Alderman is shortlisted for Disobedience: A Novel

A British woman who decided to become an author after the terror attacks of 11 September has been shortlisted for the Orange Award for New Writers. London-born Naomi Alderman left her marketing job at a law firm in New York to take a writing course before finishing her debut novel in a library.

Her book Disobedience, set within north-west London's Orthodox Jewish community, is in line for the prize.

Olga Grushin wrote The Dream Life of Sukhanov,
about a Russian who regrets his career path

Moscow-born Olga Grushin, who now lives in the US, is recognised for The Dream Life of Sukhanov.

The novel tells the story of a high-ranking Soviet official who is uneasy about choosing a safe and comfortable career instead of his real calling as an underground artist.

Nominee Yiyun Li was recently denied residency in the US

Chinese author Yiyun Li was raised in Beijing but after a decade of living in the US she was recently refused permanent residency in the country, despite letters of support from novelist Salman Rushdie.

Li's work A Thousand Years of Good Prayers is a collection of 10 short stories based in China and among Chinese Americans in the US.
